When loading up the kids...

Does anyone have a few tips for maintaining situational awareness while loading kids into the car?

I feel very vulnerable during this process. I constantly have to duck into the car to fasten straps and get the kids situated. This leaves me in a compromised position. I always put the kids in first, and often have to leave them sitting there while I load groceries, etc. (keys in pocket, of course).

It is virtually impossible to focus 100% on what's going on around me and to get out of the parking lot quickly. How do I mitigate potential threats?

Thanks,

A well armed spouse would be the best thing!

Failing that, I find the safest thing to do is park away from everything. Don't give the BG a place to hide. No buildings or other cars nearby if possible. If someone happens to park nearby while your in the store just do a quick check to make sure there's no one lying in wait.

You can look around before you transition children to the car.

Looking through the car windows, use rearview mirrors, reflections from other car windows, and side mirrors can help with maintaining your vision when buckling kiddos. One suggestion you can do is put the child in the seat, look around, buckle one strap, look around, buckle last strap, and look around.

Much depends on car type, how many children, ages of children, etc..

My wife and I often have our grand children with us. I find the "buckle up" routine makes me feel very vulnerable. I do try to park away from the crowd...but there always seems to be cars around us when we come out.

The kids can climb into the seats. Than I'll reach in to buckle one in place. As I move to the second, I check around, looking for something I don't want to see, then buckle in # two.

All I can do is try to look everywhere as we approach the car. I know I can't see everything...and the BG will come from the very area I couldn't see!

Well, you can see I have no answer. Good luck, stay vigilant!

Mark.
