When it's all said and done, is this a better choice than the Mossie cruiser?

That model would give you the option of using the full-stock or the PG. Any big named brand 12gauge shotgun would serve you well. I would stick to 12gauge because it has more ammo options and its more common.
 
A friend of mine down in Houston had one of those. He liked it a lot, and I got to pass a few shells through it. The fit and finish didn't seem quite as nice as my Winchester 1300 (though not a big difference), but I liked it enough to want one of those as well. It does the job, and I like that it comes with options. I probably wouldn't use the pistol grip, but it's there if you ever want it.
 
Good choice, but I would totally stay away from the pistol grip. IF you want a pistol grip style, I would buy an aftermarket stock that has a pistol grip + stock. Firing from the hip is not a good idea. :eek: :)

I think it will be fun to expand my firearm knowledge and learn to use
a different type of gun than the one I have always used, the semi auto pistol.

I also think the mere sight/sound of one of these babies will have
a huge deterrent effect if it ever became necessary to call it into action! :D

I get the impression that even the most hardened criminal would be deterred
staring down the business end of a 12ga! :eek:

Why do you prefer the Remington 870?

When I did a quick look at "Bud's gun shop", all of the 870's had
a rather small 4 round capacity.

I like having more chances to "get it right"....
 
In response to the Mossy 500, yes, it comes with both a full stock and a pistol-only grip. They change out with one bolt quite easily. It would be entirely up to you which you wanted on the gun and could change it as often as you wanted. I like 870s, too, but the Mossy is going to be much cheaper and at the end of the day should do the same thing. It's not as "nice" or "pretty" a gun in some respects, but it'll probably outlast you.
 
The Mossy is a bit cheaper, but far from MUCH cheaper. At the end of the day, the Mossy is a somewhat valid option, but the 870 is a much better one.
 
Each comparably equipped, on average the 500 is going to be about $100 cheaper (based on the last time I priced them). $100 is quite a bit of scratch if you're looking to be cheap. It's not like you're getting an inferior weapon with the Mossberg or anything. But that's just one man's opinion. I personally would probably end up with an 870 before a 500, but that's not to say that I don't like the 500. If I were looking for the cheapest possible 12ga for the purpose of defense, I'd probably go with the 500 or even the Maverick. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that the 870 is just a bit more refined.
