When did S&W stop making Model 586's?

Is the (blue) M586 no longer available? What would have been the last year of production of this revolver, and is the M586-4 the last of this model? What is the 'going price' of a M586-4 (6") in minty condition?
Thanks!

With the exception of a small Performance Center run of L-Comps in 2000, the 586 was discontinued in November of 1999.

The "-5" was the last variation.

6" seems to be the most common bbl. length for L-frames. I personally might pay a shade over three bills if it was truly cherry and had the box & docs. Otherwise, mid-to-high twos.

I have a 586-5 6" barrel that I bought NIB in the summer of 01' and I would not take less than $330 for it because it is an excellent shooter and can't be replaced. No internal lock or silly flag!!!

Thanks for the information! :) Prices can be erratic up here in Canada compared to US prices on used guns, but "quality" guns like a Model 586 seem pretty much in line with what you say....I have agreed to pay $480 Canadian for this beauty (with original box and manual). That's US$300.

As noted prices vary greatly by area. Three bills would mold and rot in your wallet before you could take home a excellent 6" 586 with them in my county. :(

Mike Davies--

You did well. Good shooting!

Blue Duck357--

Because of the growing popularity of IDPA and other action shooting sports in my neck of the woods, semi-autos are selling about 3 to 1 against revolvers.

I shoot both types in competition and find that my revolver (686 4") shooting and subsequent need for more speedloading has helped me with shooting strategy and gun handling skills more so than merely flinging lead down range from my semi-autos. Getting to be that the younger shooters think that revolvers are "old fashioned." That's OK--just means more for me to buy!!!

586

The old 586's are destined to be a classic some day. I still have a four inch gun that I picked up used at a gun show about 15 years ago. Put a weaver mount and dot sight on it. It shoots like I can't believe. I've never had the slightest urge to trade it off. This gun has a glass smooth action that would make any Colt Python envious. Certainly a keeper.

I think you did well Mike.

I have a back burner project....
Want 4" 586 cheap....lots of finish wear but low mileage.
Going to remove most of the extra lug...trim it down so it looks like a 19.

586 is my favorite L frame.

TWERP!

You North of the Border types coming onto this website and bragging about the great prices you're paying for S&W revolvers now that everyone is dumping them!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

:D

Heh, heh...wondered when you'd show up, Mr. Irwin.. :D
Lots of S&W's for sale up here, but most are sub-105mm barrels and prohibited. This one that I've found is a beauty....I've got far too many Rugers, so my gunsafe needed "classing up" a bit. This one's a keeper! :

Hi, Mike:
Just to make your day, I paid CAN$225 for my well used M28-2 3 years ago, complete with Herrett grips. ($25 to the Feds  )

Hi Jack: I haven't seen a "Highway Patrolman" with a 6" barrel in ANY condition going for under $450Cdn these days. Dunno why...
Most of the Smiths are holding their prices quite well, most used ones in v.good to excellent condition, regardless of model (as long as they aren't prohib) seem to be up around the $700Cdn mark, so I'm quite pleased with getting a minty 586 for $480Cdn.

Hi, Mike:
Volume really picked up at the gun shows in Saskatchewan last winter. It seemed that everyone had the attitude that "I don't care what the Liberals think, I'm buying a gun and shooting it.", so prices followed demand. Actually, they didn't say it that politely.

Have fun with that 586!
