what's your survival rifle?

hello all.
I have seen a plethora of SHTF threads as of late but I always think they're a little funny because people look at SHTF as anything from an economic collapse to a zombie apocolypse. so for this thread I am looking at a very woods survival situation where you have to hunt your own food and live for several months on what the land can provide.

I would take my AR15, it is suited to taking up to deer sized game, ammo is fairly compact as far as centerfire rounds are concerned, it has already proven that it can handle being bounced off trees and coated in mud. it's accurate and replacement parts are easily stockpiled. what is your survival rifle, round of choice and reason for such?

both good choices so far.

mi carbine.
lever action .357.
mini 30.

imo, any rifle with reasonable capacity, a cartridge that could lethally wound either human or animal and punch standard body armor or sheet metal, and be squirrel head accurate at 100 feet or so gets my vote.

I don't like a shotgun for that. how many boxes of 12 gauge ammo would it take to survive for a year on rabbits and raccoons?

I'd very seriously consider a 10-22 with a bunch of backup magazines, and a contender with a .222, 7mm 08, and .44 magnum barrel, with scopes or dots on the two small bores.

A single brick of .22 rimfire would go a long time feeding yourself on any small game you can find. the 10 22 is not a combat weapon, but being nailed with a handful of high energy rounds will take a person down.

I'd have to go with my Savage MkII, because it's tough and accurate. No need to worry about feeding issues, etc as it's a bolt action. Like briandg noted, a brick of .22 will last a while. Plus I'm comfortable killing small game up to 100 yds with it (4x scope), and while it's certainly not ethical, a .22 can kill a deer.

One my SIG SHR 970s. .270 or 30/06 for deer and similar game and 2 legged varmints, 7MM Remington Magnum or 300 Winchester Magnum for larger game.

My savage MKII with irons and a 4x scope or my marlin model 70p (the blued one with a wood stock). Like most have said, a brick of .22lr will last a long time and kill most small or medium game in a pinch.

My Savage 7mm Rem Mag. It would take rabbit up to large game although I'm sure it would do a number on a rabbit. Mine is very accurate and reliable as well.

if it has to be a rifle then: Marlin in 357 magnum... can kill rats to deer.

but I think a 12GA would be better. Can hunt both big and small game as well as birds.

or best of both worlds. A survival rifle with a rifle and shotgun barrel.

Henry Frontier 22LR.

Like said before, a box of shells could keep you feed for a very long time.

But I would only shoot when I was desperate. Trapping game and fishing would be a priority so I didn't have to waste my ammo.

SInce this is the rifle posting section....

my Winchester 30/30 - light, handy, holds 7 rounds, and ammo would be available at any backwoods store (or probably in most homes for that matter). I am considering in a SHTF situation that I would mostly be food gathering (it would take anything in the southeast where I live), and would be OK for self defense - 7 rounds I would feel comfortable with as I do not buy into the "hundreds of zombies" scenario, but could see a couple of ruffians trying to make off with my car, food, etc.

If I had to leave right now and head into the woods, I'd grab my AR15. I have tons of ammo, extra parts, compact cleaning kit, and enough mags that would easily fit into my backpack. Its accurate out to 260 yards with iron sights and further if I grab my scope. It certainly can take down small to medium game. All I would need in a survival rifle.

I think I would go with a rifle that is chambered in one of my revolver calibers and would take both with me.

If It's really SHTF...

I'd submit no single weapon would be adequate:

AK-47 - general hunting for most any 4 legged (and lesser) animals out to a few hundred yards, incredibly rugged and insensitive to environmental issues (as in who can get parts if SHTF)

Remington 1100 - Small game, birds, close range

M82A1 - Standoff ability for most any 4 wheeled or 2 legged threat to long range, punch-thru for light / body armor, one of the few with APEX / MK211 rounds, albeit a little pricey
(and a .50 pointed at you from any range is a *very* humbling experience)

Most importantly: Significant quantities of ammo
