why? because any sane person doing wrong will poop his pants hearing that sound. and any insane person will need to be scraped off the walls after ignoring that sound.

I just did a poll like this about a week ago.;)

Expect an even bigger landslide win for the pump since you specified for home defense.:p

The kind I like is the kind that I practice with the most...and it should be the same for most people.

The pump will win because it is the most affordable and most widespread...not necessarily because it is the best available. Nothing wrong with a good pump, but it's popularity is largely due to it's affordability over the high quality semi-autos.

Like has been said before, the racking of pump gun is a unmistakable sound, it crosses all language barriers!!
Also, IMHO it's more reliable than an auto loader.

Racking a pump action shotgun is overrated...hardened criminals aren't going to necessarily run away...but they'll know where you are. Y'all need to stop watching so much TV.

Without getting into all of the silliness about racking sounds  and further derailing your thread, a pump or quality semiauto is probably the best option for reasons mathman stated.

A double would probably be adequate, although some people make an awfully big deal about the lack of capacity. One potential bonus is that a double is shorter due to lack of action length.

Lever action is a tremendously interesting poll option. I don't think I've ever seen a thread discussing the use of a Winchester '87 clone for home defense.

An auto makes about the same sound as a pump, when a round is chambered. You can keep the gun in a cruiser ready state and when needed, jack the bolt back. The bad guys won't know the difference in the sound. In addition, a shotgun is a fairly close quarters weapon. If you ever have to use it, you might get tagged in the fight. A semiauto can be fired with one arm, which might be the edge that you need to keep fighting. Just a thought.

I have both break-action and pump-action shotguns. I voted break-action because the question was "what is my favorite" and break-action it is. However, should I seriously expect bad trouble like civil unrest or some such thing, I would grab a pump without hesitation and if I only had one shotgun for HD it would be a pump.

I had voted pump... But the sound of the action don't matter... I usually have one in the pipe and my M-500 safety tab makes no noise... When I do not have one in the pipe, I cycle the action silently.

I practiced doing so as I like to be the only one with the advantage... "If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics SUCK!!!"

The reason for the preference of pump over any other action type is due to 2 factors... One being reliability. The only gun possibly more reliable is a break barrel with exposed hammer/s...

The other reason is round capacity... in this, the pump outweighs the possible reliability advantage the break barrel may have had.

Only reason I chose pump is I am just a wee bit faster with it than I am with my semi and that is probably because of a whole bushel basket of years experience with it.

Boogerman would never hear me rack the slide to chamber a round, just the teeny tiny sound of the safety going off. Call me a dinosaur but I would think a loud Boom and muzzle flash in my face would be scarier than the click clack of a pump action being operated. More better they stay home and play solitaire then come to my house. Between my brother, my sister and myself he would be met with a whole bunch of hostility.
