What's wrong with Taurus ?

Well, Rob said that I should start a thread on Taurus handguns so here goes.

It's been my experience that Taurus handguns don't quite live up to the quality of most of their competition. I mentioned a PT945 that I owned in the previous thread. This pistols main problem was the cheaply constructed magazine.

My other experiences have been with Taurus revolvers. I had a Model 85 that I carried as a back up for a year or so. I sent it back to Taurus three times for repair. The 85s problems were in the cylinder (chambers bored off line) and the firing pin (broke twice). After getting it back the third time I traded it off for a Ruger SP-101. The last was a Taurus .357 mag (I forget the model, 66?)revolver. This gun went out of alignment(fairly soon) and caused wear on the right side of the forcing cone.

I do agree that Taurus quality has really come up in the last couple of years, I still don't think that they'll hold up over the long haul like a Smith or Ruger.

Watcha' guys think ?

A friend of mine has a shop, and I help out from time to time. He has gone from recommending these guns to only stocking one model. The PT-945 has been horrible. He has three of them that he has to sell as used, due to them being sent back to the factory. These were new guns with less than 100rds thru them when the breakage occured. So, to keep the customer happy he gave them new guns, but these things are impossible to move. It appears to be a matter of "Keeping up with the Joneses" They are kicking these things out, but I don't think that there is any quality control.

OK, I'll bite. I have three Tauri. A M605 that the locking bolt pin came out on, and was lost, the first time the gun was fired. Off to taurus it went!!! In addition, I had them port the barrel while they had it, but that is another story. Upon return, I have not had problem one. Good solid gun. It is one of my summertime carry guns. My M85 has had no problems that have been attributed to any defect in the weapon itself. I was shooting semi-jacketed rounds through it, and one of the remaining bullets creeped foward due to the recoil, and caused a stoppage. I only shoot jacketed rounds through it now. No problems. My PT-92 AFS is brand new with only 150 rounds through it. So far, there have been no problems, or hicups whatsoever.

Just as there is no such thing as too much fun,
there is no such thing as owning just one gun!!!

Off my meds (quit smoking), armed to the teeth, and loose on an unsuspecting society!!!

224,

Between my dad and I, we have 7 Tauri(6 revolvers, 1 pistol). [Thanks denfoote for the plural form.]
They all have been purchased within the last 10 years; and roughly 3500 rounds (between them) later, no problems of any kind.

The one gripe I have is the sterile, generic owner's manuel that comes in each box.
Kind of a disservice to the customer when compared to other companies out there.
I've written and called to complain, but to no avail.

...defend the 2nd., it protects us all.
No fate but what we make...

I have a PT-92 with 1000 rounds through it. Accurate, and not even as much as a hic-up. I did replace the cheesy factory grips with Hogue, and it made a world of difference. I would trust it just as much as my Beretta, Sigs, Walthers or Rugers.

I recently bought a 44 mag from Taurus. The cylinder bolt didn't hold with hot loads so the cylinder rotated to the samce charge hole that was just fired with a pull of the trigger. I sent the gun back. The repair was successful and prompt. First a repair technician disassembled it, looked for any problem and corrected it. Next a second technician did the same. This was followed by a supervisor who insured everything was done right. Lastly they put 80 rounds through it to check function. I am told that is their routine. They found three problems and corrected them. It is now an excellent gun.

What I take away from this is that their quality control is what you should expect from their prices. Three flaws is quite a bit. However their service is great. I am tempted to return any gun to Taurus so it can be thoroughly checked out and tested.

Well I must be lucky. I've been buying tauri ever since they started bringing them in, I think, and have never had to send one in for a repair. The only complaint I do have is the two model 85s that I have had, still have one of them, get a little loose in the cylinder. But of course in their defence every colt revolver I've ever handled or used has had the same drawback. I don't care much for the newer semi autos, but thats just personal. I have currenly two PT92s that are about ten years and 2 to 3 thousand round old each and they never fail to feed or extract and are at least combat accurate too.
Nice thing about taurus is they fix their stuff if it ever breaks. I think there are far worse firearms companies out there.

I have had Tarus handguns for about six years. The revolvers, 22's and 357's are quite accurate and never fail. I also have a PT92 and 908 that work well once I learned to keep my right arm and wrist rigid so the casings ejected properly. I love the feel of the guns and fire a lot of shells through them. I also just bought the 22 conversion for the 92 so I can shoot 22 and 9 mm from the same gun. Will try it out at the range this week end.
I'm a recreational shooter working hard to get the younger generation interested in shooting so we have others to help look out for our Second Amendment rights.

I have a PT100 and a 441 and they have both been accurate and reliable guns since I bought them about 6 years ago. They're also easy to shoot well.

If you're not a little upset with the way the world is going, you're not paying attention.

Greetings 224 and other's; May I call your
attention to the fact that Four Seasons
Firearms refuse's to sell ANY Taurus made
firearms. They are on the web; but I forgot
the URL, sorry. I think the main reason for
this decision is the fact that their warranty
repair service is so lousy? Anyway, I'm taking their advice, and steering clear
of the cheaply made weapons; abeit revolver
or semi-auto.

Best Wishes,

First handgun I ever owned was a Taurus nickel plated model 66 357 6-inch. Great gun, never failed. First semiauto handgun I ever owned was a Taurus PT92 9mm. Great, accurate gun, no jams.
Have owned a couple Taurus revolvers since then, both 38s, and had no trouble.
I have heard negative reports on the single stack Taurus autos from dealers and friends. Perhaps it would be wise to steer clear of these guns and stick with the autos made on the Beretta pattern and the revolvers made on the Smith pattern.

What is wrong with guns like Taurus, Charles Daly,Liama is the purity of the metal, unsophisticated heat treating and poor quality control, that's all. You get what you pay for.The big bargain at $450 is the Glock and then Ruger.
