What's wrong with Beretta?

I noticed that Beretta pistols are rarely mentioned on the forum. The U.S army adopted it, so it has to be somewhat decent. It seems that beretta is rarely heard. Why?

I like Beretta pistols well enough. I have one of the Cougar series in .45 ACP and it is a good shooting pistol. I need to find some replacement sights so that POA and POI match a little better but that is no big deal.

My only complaint is the placement of the safety on the slide. I will never understand why Beretta does this. This one item is why I am not really in the market for another.

Beretta's are good quality, relaiable, accurate pistols. I'm also not wild about the slide mounted safety but I can live with it. My only complaints are the previous guns without the dovetailed front sight ands that the 96 series is only slightly beefed up for the 40 cartridge. They wear out quickly, but these issue have been addressed with the new Brigader and Elite models.

My stainless Beretta 92 was my first gun, and I still love it. It's a full sized gun (although maybe a little narrower than some, especially in the top half). I bought it because I wanted a high capacity 9mm, an exposed hammer, and a safety.

While it runs with the best of them in most areas, the Beretta will beat them in reliability. This is because the factory magazines are very well made, the internals of the gun are well designed, and the ejection port is huge.

My Beretta is my favorite carry pistol. I know I have mentioned it several times at TFL. Most threads where they are mentioned are about other things and end up finding Beretta as the ideal pistol. (but not always)

If it had a steel or polymer frame, frame mounted saftey, and could be carried cocked and locked, it would be the best 9mm pistol in the world, IMHO

I recently purchased the Beretta Model 87W Cheetah in .22LR as a plinking gun. I have put several hundred rounds though it. It is ammo sensitive (like most .22's) and likes the Remington Thunderbolts & CCI Mini Mags.

Pistol is very accurate and quality is first-rate; fully equal to the German Made SIG's IMO.

I does seem like Kahr, SIG, and Glock get more air time on TFL, but I'm not a psychologist, I only see what I see.

With all due respect, I couldn't disagree with you more! :D Based on my personal information and experience's, in NO WAY
will Beretta's win the reliability war. :)

In numerous documented instances, the U.S.
Military reported malfunctions with their
M9 pistols; in some case's report's even
have the slide blowing off the weapon.
On the other hand, the Sig-Sauer P226
was rated the "top performer" during all
aspect's of evaluation, by the military.
It seems as though the Beretta was chosen
due to the price factor per unit.

I think that the Beretta 92s are fine guns (Especially love the open barrel design), yet they sure are not as relible as a Glock, H&K, Sig, or a 1911.

Ala Dan:

SIG 226 had also had some frame breakages in the US military service. Since then, SIG rectified the problem.

I like my Beretta 92FS Centurion a great deal. It is reliable, accurate and easy to maintain. However, it is also big, chunky and has pretty heavy double-action trigger.

Indeed, if it had a "cocked-and-locked" capability and a thinner grip (perhaps by reducing the capacity to ten while maintaining the length of the grip), it would be THE pistol for me.

I prefer glocks and sigs, but my berettas have been just as reliable as my sigs and glocks. Also berettas can be just as accurate as sigs. They just need trigger work.

Come now sir. I hope you don't think that a 1911 is more reliable than a Beretta. I love 1911s too but, let's be real...Freezin1

I have 4 (3032 Tomcat, 85 Cheetah, 92FS, 8045 Cougar), all have been reliable (the Tomcat did take some breaking-in), accurate, good shooing guns. I have not reallly had to use Beretta customer service beyond a few questions and a manual request (got it in 5 days), they were pleasant and curteous to deal with. M2

Josh D,

You describe the Taurus PT92 of old. Not the new one with the three position safety but the first ones that were imported. Frame mounted safety and ability to carry cocked and locked.

I'm waiting for the Beretta 9000. I think this puppy will give those that are looking for a compact, polymer frame, DA/SA pistol a nice option.

So many pistols, so little money.

Nothing is wrong with Beretta. I'm a big fan of the Cougar series.I shoot and carry an 8040,I like it :) I to am waiting for the 9000 to hit the street. Looks good and maybe worth the wait. :)
FWIW / Happy Shooting :)

i love both my berettas. i have a 92FS and a 92G Elite. they both work great, are extreemly reliably and accurate.

also not only the US Army addopted the M9 (beretta 92FS) as their sidearm. all 5 branches of the military addopted it.

When the army ran its (XM9?) trials, the 1911 was the benchmark and it ran minimum of 99.5% of the time w/o failure. The Beretta was next best. A sure way to get a 1911 to be unreliable is to A) make it too tight and B) use HPs.
