What's with the 7?

The major rifle makers all use '7' in model designations. Win. 70; Rem. 700; Ruger 77 and now someone else has a 700. Wouldn't surprise me if there are more.
So, what is with the 7 thing?

Winchester came out with the Model 70 in 1936 and marketed it as The Rifleman's Rifle. Remington came out with the Model 700 in 1962. Sometime thereafter, Ruger came out with the Model 77.

Coincidence that they've all got a 7 in their name? I think not. More likely, marketing. Marketing plays a huge part. Do you think that it's a coincidence that when in 1949 Bill Ruger came out with his Standard pistol, it used the same grip angle as the Luger so sought after by returning GI's? Or that it looked a lot like the Nambu pistol used by the Japanese?

I don't know how many people I've had tell me over the years, that they've got their dad's old Luger, and when they show it to me, it's a Ruger Standard.

Well, Montana Rifle Company brought out an action which was a fairly good copy of a Winchester M70 (even uses the same aftermarket triggers and scope mounts), but they called it the M1999.

Very few people have heard of this.

Perhaps they should have called it the M1777... :)
