I just read an article earlier where one(Frank James) claimed the glock 20 in 10mm was had more muzzle energy than the 44 magnum.Thats funny the last time i looked the 44 had twice the muzzle energy of the 10mm.
I`m not knocking the 10 but a 44 it is not,I have been thinking of getting one when i find a good delta elite!

Odd... And Mr. James has always struck me as rather sensible, too... Maybe what he meant was "10mm auto Winchester Silvertip out of a 6" bbl has more energy than .44 mag Winchester Silvertip out of a 2.5" tube.". That's about the only scenario where I can see this a working out to a truth. Of course in total muzzle energy of rounds on board, a G20 loaded with 15 rounds of 175gr Silvertips or 180gr ProLoads has quite a bit of cumulative muzzle energy, but one doesn't normally tally pistols that way...

10mm: It's not the size of the Dawg in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog!

"... cumulative muzzle energy ..."? 'Never thought of that one. I like it. It's perfect for gunzine writers, typewriter shooters and gun shop commandos.

I'll 'fess up to the location of my theft for that one, sensop...

I'm a diligent reader of Car & Driver and some letter writer is always writing whenever they test an exotic car to say "I could afford 5 '77 Trans-Ams for what that car cost yadda-yadda...". One time, some smart @$$ (God, I wish it had been me...) wrote in with "For the price of that Einschleimer Banzodinimobile, I could afford 10 of the '79 Buick Wagons I'm driving now, which would give me, cumulatively, a 3500 cubic-inch V-80 with 1350 hp and a top cumulative speed of (hold on to your hats) 980 mph, while seating 80 in comfort..." etc. etc.

I laughed so hard that I nearly soiled my pantaloons. Sarcasm can be so instructive at times...

Remember their motto:

It's the Advertising, Stupid!

They must be dying knowing that a major advertiser - SW is in the tank.

Do they right some glow of the new SW gun!?
I'd drop my subscription (if I had one) on the spot.

I recall seeing Ayoob use the "cumulative enery" thing in an article once. I thought it was pretty silly. Anyway, kinetic energy is not a good indicator of the elusive thing called "stopping power".

That said, "Farmer Frank" James is normally a pretty good source of hype-free information. I would be interested to know the context and exact content of his statement.

Of course sometimes you probably have to be creative in the gunrag trade. In all honesty, I'd hate to be handed some story germ like "DA Duty Auto Shootout!"...

You're handed a USP, 92FS, P226 and 5904 and a bunch of ammo and expected to pronounce some kind of winner. They're all roughly the same size & weight. They're all comfortable in your hand. None of them jam during the test. You go to the ransom rest- the best groups from each with it's preferred ammo are within 1" or so of each other. Sure, you have a personal favorite brand, but none would get kicked out of the gun safe. Do you 'diss' the Ford and praise the Chevy, risking the flood of canceled subscriptions from FoMoCo diehards who claim you picked a winner on purely subjective terms? Do you declare a tie and get branded as a 'corporate shill'? No, wait! You invent some new rating like 'cumulative energy' on the spot so you can at least tie the victor to some number in a chart! Mission accomplished! You return to the editor a happy writer, only to be told that next month you're to do a comparison of (oh, great!) medium frame .357's!

Still, though, a job I wouldn't mind having...

Tamara:

If you are interested in writing articles, give it a try. Most magazines will send you their writers guide on request which will give you their length and illustration requirements.
Most of them are interested in articles bout guns from the point of view of a woman shooter, gun selection, methods of carrying, and self defense lawy are popular subjecta.
After reading a magazine's writers guide, send the editor a one page (singe spaced) letter out;ining ypur proposed article. I would suggest that ypu try GUNS and COMBAT HANDGUNS for starters.
If you get a goahead post it and I will be glad to tell you the rules for setting up the format of your article's manuscript.

Regards, Hard Ball

It has been reliably reported that gun writers who slam the product they are testing don't get any more products to test. End of gun writing career.

'Nuf sed?

Jim

Speaking of which, who reads "Gun Tests"? They don't take advertising, and they say they buy all their stuff retail. Are their evaluations any more reliable than mainstream gunwriters'?

killer45auto,

Have you looked at the Delta Elite 10MM at Hot Shots? They have (had) one in the pawn shop. I checked it out but I don't really remember what condition it was in. Might be worth a look, might not.

BTW, if you know anyone local to Atlanta looking for a P220, please let me know. I am selling mine.

Any gunwriter who slams on guns will indeed have a short lived career. I'm pretty sure that gunwriters will get a free or discounted gun in exchange for a glowing review. I even heard about one case where a gunwriter got a free hunting trip to Africa just for writing a good article.
This is why I don't really base any gun buying decisions on gun rag articles. I just buy them for pictures, and maybe some stuff on tactics. Any review on guns will just have to be left to me for a final decision.

It was either Peter Kassler or Walt Rauch who cam up with that on the old prairienet glock list long ago AIR. The gist of the quote was that a fully loaded glock 20 is the most powerful hand gun in the world compared to any other fully loaded hg. Interesting trivia but not unusually useful.
