what's up with the camo targets?

OK guys, please disabuse me of my ignorance. I'm watching Personal Defense TV and they have those wacky camo targets. What's the point? Wouldn't it be better to have a silhouette, preferably one of a bad guy aiming a gun at you to provide more realism?

Also that post firing little side to side vision/gun sweep is quite silly. First they are looking down at the ground, I guess just in case some garden snakes or crawling ninjas are on their way, and they only go maybe like 15deg side to side, hardly enough to properly sweep the area of additional threats. Am I being too harsh?

Well, quite often real life bad guy targets wear camo too.
As for the sweeps it drills into you that after you down your target, the fight isn't over. Your not done yet. If there was one, there are probably others about that need popping.

I know, but the targets are abstract, they don't represent a realistic silhouette, albeit wearing camo. And I would imagine that one should sweep at a higher sight line and through a larger arc to better survey the area, not head/line of sight down and sweep only 10 deg side to side.

The main point of camo targets is not to have a definite aiming point, forcing the shooter to shoot for center mass; bad guys don't go around with nifty black bullseyes on them. The assess (looking from side to side) is not only for looking for other BGs, but also to counter the effects of tachypsychia.

Ah, thanks, I guess this is a good idea then :) Although I could imagine a better and more realistic silhouette without a bullseye on it.

""tachypsychia"
That means "Target Lock"?"

Time distortion.
Many people who experience high stress events report that events seem to occur in 'slow motion'.

"Tachypsychia" literally means "fast thoughts" - as brickeyee said, it causes time distortion effects. Along with tunnel vision & auditory exclusion, tachypsychia is one of the most common reactions to a danger-induced adrenalin dump.

"Tachypsychia" Thanks for putting a term on it, I always thought of it as crapping my pants. :):) Seriously is there any way to combat Tachypsychia ???? Besides train train and train so more. Are there any particular drills to prepare oneself for Tachypsychia. I have gone as far as to run 2 miles, at a fairly fast pace enough to get my heart rate to 150. My hand shakes and aim is off but not to the point of missing the center mass. Sorry if this is off thread but are there any particular drills to prepare oneself for Tachypsychia.

Now thats funny.!

Vlad,
I must have been under-cafeinated when I posted "to counter the effects of tachypsychia." I should have said to break the effect of tunnel vision. Sorry for any confusion. Glad pax was on top of it.

There are no drills that I'm aware of, however, some believe that time "slowing down" in a crisis may actually work to our favor.

Denny, no problem, I understood what you were trying to say and realized it was a tachypsychic flight of ideas and slip of the tongue :p
