Whats the story with NYC

I'm going to NYC this weekend from Dallas to visit a buddy of mine. After hearing about all the fun I'm having he wants to give shooting a try. I think I read that you need a license to shoot at a range there? What is this nonsense? I want to go to a range, rent a hangun and shoot it with my friend. Is this posssible without some special permit? If not, do you NYers get issued a permit to wipe.... I digress.
What do I need to know about NYC?
Thanks!

You don't need a permit to wipe, but to own, carry, shoot, or even rent a gun you do need all kinds of permits. There is only one range I know of, and its expensive (even by Manhattan standards). If you want to take your friend shooting hop in the car and drive to a range out on Long Island, in New Jersey, or Philly; you're simply not going to get to shoot on a range anywhere in NYC. Personally, I'd recommend Classic Pistol just north of Philly - its about a 1.5 to 2hr drive from Manhattan.

There is a very simple answer...

You cannot shoot a handgun anywhere in NY state UNLESS you are there for a sanctioned match and/or are beign given instruction by a certified instructor. Except for those two cases you cannot eevn TOUCH a handgun. That is correct. If your friend has a permit and a handgun he is in violation for allowing you to even hold the weapon and you are a criminal for posessing it. That is ALL of NY State.

Driving to Long Island or UpState NY will make no difference. While it is harder to get a permit in NYC the rules about out of state visitors is the same.

There are no ranges that will rent a handgun to a no-permit holder for that reason. They will not even take one out of the case for you to look at.

Welcome to NY.
