What's the finest 300 yard rifle in the world?

I'm not a fan of long range hunting. What do you think is the best rifle and cartridge for 300 yard and less medium game? I'm looking for something very accurate at shorter range, rugged, finely crafted, but not rediculously powerful.

I really d0on't think that you can go wrong with a .270 for medium game @ 300 yards! It shoots flat, little recoil, and it will reliably take down medium sized game at that distance.

Any cartridge between the .243 and the '06, as far as muzzle energy. What matters most is how you shoot with whatever you have.

.270, 7mm-08 and .257 Roberts probably do the job best for the least recoil. Mas of menos. There're others, of course. That's what makes it fun.

6.5x55mm swede...why punish yourself if you don't need knockdown energy at extended ranges.

the swede is the standard competition round used in nordic countries and is also used to take game animals up to moose. it was also a fine military round.

if you want to use a short action rifle, you get the same ballistics in the .260 remington.

Art is getting close when he says .257 Roberts........I would vote for one step up and go with the Quarter-06. course I am prejudiced..........I just love that caliber.

Rifles can sometimes be a mystery. I've seen Savage 110's outshoot high priced custom guns. I've looked at perfect barrels that produced terrible accuracy, and terribe looking barrels that shot MOA. Go figure, so I'm not gonna touch that one.

As for calibers the .308 win is an extremely versatile round. If you want a bit more performance, you can use Hornady's light Magnum rounds for a bit more punch. In addition, tactical ammo- such as the TAP is usually available in .223 and .308 calibers.

Good Shooting
