ANM, no politics from me tonight, just facts.
The SW99 is not made as well as its German sibling. If you were to place the two side-by-side, you would note obvious differences in the quality of the machining, and that comes through in the fit and feel of the gun. It also accounts for the price difference between the SW99, and a P99 proofed in Ulm.
To make matters worse, early SW99's in .40cal had production problems, and that was compounded by a failed trial by the NJ State Police, where they sent them all back. Turns out it really wasn't Smith's or Walther's fault, but once a rumor goes around...
You can identify a 'real German' P99 by the Ulm proof marks, which is the netter 'N' under an eagle crest, in three places:
* On the right rear of the slide, aft of the cocking serrations
* On the right rear of the barrel flat
* On the right front of the frame, just forward of the trigger guard
