ok the 1st generation was the pebble grip, 2nd got checkering on it, and the 3rd generation has the finger grooves and rails.
i personally like the feel of the 3rd generation much more than the 2nd.
also the 1st generation guns had problems with them such as when they were dropped they could go off. this was fixed with the 2nd generation and an upgrade is available for 1st generation guns.
when the .357sig came out glock just put a .357sig barrel on the G22,23, and 27. then they realized that the .357sig was a bit more powerful than the .40 (35,000 compared to 40,000) (i forget the word for the thing those big numbers refer to but it has something to do with the power of the round).
so they made the rear frame rails a bit longer to handle the extra pressure the .357sig produced. they also decided they might as well put the upgrade on the .40cal guns also so they did. i don't know exactly when they started this but i know all 3rd generation .40/.357sig glocks have this upgrade. the 9mm glocks do not have this since it did something to effect the reliability of them. it doesn't matter though since the frame is more than strong enough for the 9mm.
