What's the best way to find my optimum LOP on a bolt action rifle?

I find that the LOP on my Rem LTR is a little long for me but I don't really know how much it should be shortened. Is there a formula for figuring this out? Trial and error is NOT an option!

What has always worked for my long, skinny arms is to hold the rifle by the pistol grip with my finger on the trigger, and bend my arm with the stock lying alongside my forearm. Almost no clearance between the butt-pad and my bicep seems to be okay for me.

Thanks Art, that makes sense. I just tried your suggestion and it seems that using your method, I'd have to shorten it by about 5/8". I'd like to be able to work the bolt without having to move the butt from my shoulder, can most people do this?

Like a lot of stuff, it takes practice. It's awkward at first, but after you work at it--it works!

(It's a good skill to have. More importantly, however, make that first shot be THE shot, so you won't have to use that skill. :) )

One who really works at it can deliver AIMED fire close to as rapidly as somebody with a semi-auto.

this may sound odd, but...

grab a gallon milk jug out of the fridge< anything heavy will work, that you can hold in your hand > put the rifle into your shooting shoulder, and grab the milk jug with the hand you would operate the bolt. lift up the jug until it passes the action of the rifle. wherever on your hand you find it compfortable to lift up on the bolt handle, in reference to it's position when lifting the milk jug, is where the bolt should be. shorten the stock until the bolt is in this position. This is to determine where the fulcrom of your arm is in relation to the bolt. you will automatically extend your arm to it's strongest position, when you lift the jug, conciquently, this point is also the most compfortable place to hold your arm when trying to get leverage on a rifle bolt. this works, try it. trigger pull is another concideration. i think this is more importaint,as accuracy will be aided by a compfortable trigger length of pull more than an easier place to operate the bolt.
