Whats the best bullet weight for Mini 14???

I usually shot 50-grain or 55-grain Brand-X reloads in my several Minis. Usually got 1-1/2 MOA with a K4. My first one, back when I could use iron sights, gave me 2 MOA without a scope.

Disremember the twist...

I could be wrong but I called Ruger in 1989 when I bought my first Mini-14. They told me the twist rate went to 1:7 in 1985. If that is the case I would use a bullet 62 grains or heavier.

Different.........

Maybe so, but the 1-7, will shoot VERY well with the 52-55's.......
1-7, will let you go to 80 grainers, IF you have the room.
It was changed to 1-7, for mil use of the 62 grain tracers in the AR's.(stabilization issue).

It is now 1-9 for Ranch Rifles. My gun shoots pretty good with 62gr and 69gr. I was very disappointed the first time I put a scope on my Mini 14 and shot 6inch groups with 55gr ammo. I can put every single shot out of my Mini 14 on a 12inch piece of paper at 300yds so it only seems bad when your shooting against an AR at 100yds. After that there isn't much of a difference. Go with 62gr or 69gr if you get a modern Mini. 62gr ammo is the SS109 or M855 and its pretty common.

Mini-14 twists

1-12 for early Mini-14s (180 series)
1-10 some real early Ranchers
1-9 current Ranchers and Minis
1-7 offered as options on current LE catalog models and for a while was on some Minis

My 1-9 early Ranch does best with Federal (American Eagle) 55gr. FMJBT. Sub 2" groups. Next is Winchester white box Q3131A. Still under 2". Black Hills 52gr. BTHP match is good (beyond excellent in my AR). IMI 62 gr. Military and FN SS-109 are great in the Mini, soso in the AR.
