Right where the guard snaps into the plate. Of my 2 M1s, one has it and one doesn't.

If I can extrapolate to the M14, M1A, and mini 14, I think it is a hole in the triggerguard (?) If so, it is there to stick a cleaning rod or similar lever in to asist in swinging the trigger guard off the receiver, ie takedown assistance.

They made a "winter trigger" setup for the M1 which mounted in that hole. The cast steel trigger guards have the hole and the stamped steel guards just sort of have a partial arc section that is used for the same purpose. The winter trigger was a lever assembly that allowed the rifleman to fire the rifle just by squeezing his hand, he didn't have to put his trigger finger in the guard at all. I've seen a picture somewhere, maybe "Small Arms of the World"?

I would never have guessed such a thing as a winter trigger. I thought it was for takedown, too (either that or they figured firing it wasn't painful enough, so they added a bump to bang into your knuckle

Milled trigger guard. Put a cleaning-rod section through it and pull back to disassemble. Never handled the winter trigger, but that makes sense. Personally, I've always been able to use my fingers to disassemble but I'm pretty strong.
