What's "SBR"?

I've seen some ads for semi-auto version of subguns (Thompson and Uzi, specifically) with standard-length barrels, instead of the 16" barrels usually seen. These subgun lookalikes are called "SBR"; I would have posted this on the long gun forum, but figured the Class III crowd would know more about tax stamps, and such. What is a SBR, and how do the laws affect those of us preferring the look, even if we can't get the rock 'n roll of the real deal?

SBR is any rifle with a barrel less than 16" in length or less than 26" overall length. They are NFA weapons, just like machineguns and require the same paperwork to acquire.
 
Short barreled rifles, they ar however NOT just like machine guns. Why you ask?
Certainly they share some of the same restrictions and paperwork, but some states that allow one, do not allow the other...and you can make an SBR today, new and sell it to anyone that can own it (via approval process). Make a new machine gun there are only a few types of folks that can own them.

NEW SBR for an individual = Form 4
New Machine gun for an individual...no such thing.
 
So, even in a state where full auto isn't legal for regular human beings (Washington), I might be able to own a SBR? Thanks for the info.
