What's my .270 worth

Hi, I have looked for used rifle pricing guides online, but they all required payment for service. Would someone be kind enough to offer their opinion on what I could sell my rifle for on consignment at the gun store (not pawn shop, I don't need a loan)? I have never shot the rifle. I have lost all of the case candy, and I am in VA. It looks brand new. I bought this as a package from Bassproshops. Thanks.

When is the best and worst time of the year to sell a rifle?

Weatherby .270
vanguard
synthetic stock
blue barrel
Bushnell scope 3x9x40
shoulder strap
Promax Protector HSC

I would check the finished auctions through gunbroker.com to see what these rifles have sold for. I've never sold anything via a pawnshop but my understanding is they'll screw you. guess it depends on how badly you need the money.

Thanks for the responses. I am not selling it at a pawn shop. The gun store said that they buy used guns, or they can display my gun for sale. They will handle all of the paperwork, and they take a percentage of sell price.

That's a good question. In the shops I frequent, I've seen standard, garden-variety .270 rifles selling used, at retail for well under $500.00, depending on condition.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but there are some undeniable economic considerations to be examined.

If you take it to a pawn shop, they'll give you $200.00 if you're lucky. It seems that you've picked the worst time of year to try to sell your rifle. In the current economic climate, in the spring of the year, hunting rifles are a hard sell and the shops likely have six or eight good, clean, used .270 rifles on the rack. This is the time of year I buy rifles, simply for those considerations. There are lots of them on the market and they're cheap.

Whether or not you've ever shot it is of absolutely no consideration. It's a used rifle. Just as an example, two years ago, about Easter, I bought a .25-06 Ruger Model 77 with scope for $225.00. Last month, I bought a .308 caliber Remington 700 for $525.00. I considered the Remington a good deal because it looked brand new and had a Leupold scope mounted. I figured that the scope alone was worth $200.00, so I got the rifle for $325.00.

Three years ago, I stumbled across a Howa 1500 in .270 Win, mounted with a Simmons scope. The dealer was trying to get it off his shelf and I paid $150.00 for the combo.

The spring of the year is the absolute worst time to try to sell a rifle. It's also the best time to buy a rifle.

FWIW, The Howa IS the Weatherby Vanguard - with a better polish/blue, and a Weatherby stock, Voila !, a Weatherby.

.

[The Vanguard sold new for $399.00, you should exepect to get around $199.00 used.

You think I would only get $200 for the whole package, or just the rifle w/o scope?

I'm in VA and would give you $200 for the package. If interested pm me.

That being said, I'm not sure what the value on it would be exactly. I know they sell a rifle that sounds about like this at our Walmart for $400 (or is it $300? I'm pretty sure $400) without a scope. The Bushnell scope doesn't add any value at all as far as myself and most others are concerned unless it's a Bushnell Elite series. You might be able to get $250-300 on a good day if you wait for it, but I think $200 is more in the fair price range if you want it to go fairly quickly.

Thanks, but I am probably going to wait until this Fall to sell the rifle. Unless, someone local wants to buy the package for $300. Or, just the rifle w/o scope for $250.

No problem. If you change your mind just let me know. I think you'd probably be able to get slightly more in the fall than you would now. I'd wait to before hunting season and try to sell it. Right now as said, the market is flooded with guns and the economy is horrible.

[There's never a good time to sell a gun ! find another way to pay that Bill . It costs too much to buy them again. ]

This is true. I am mostly a fishing enthusiast. I bought a rifle, because my friends said that they used to hunt when they were little. I wanted to try my hand at it. I tried to convince them to go hunting, but they are too busy with their honey-do-lists.

I don't have anyone to go hunting with, and there aren't any long distance shooting ranges nearby that I can go to. Maybe I'll try trap shooting.

PawPaw, I need to go shopping with you after the tax check gets here.

Find a good reputable pawn shop, go in and talk with the counter guys near the rifles. Go in several times and talk to them, tell them what you're interested in and what you're looking for.

My counterguys know that I'm always on the lookout for certain things. Any pump centerfire rifle. (I"m a sucker for them.) Any good quarter-bore. Any left-hand bolts. I've got a son and two grandsons that shoot off-side. I love Savage rifles and old Mausers, and I don't like .270s. Go figure.

I've been buying from the same pawn shop for eight years and the guys know me, they know that I know something about firearms, and they know that I won't nickel-and-dime them to death. I know that there are several prices on any pawn shop gun and after I inspect the firearm, I ask them what the real price is. Over the last eight years, I've bought three or four guns a year from them. I"m a very good repeat customer.

Buying from the same shop, paying cash, and being a good customer gets me a discount that I might not get at a box store.

I hear ya PawPaw! Next for me is a SS .308, then a sweet .25-06 of some variation. After that, I guess itll be back to the youth 20 gauge and another 1911.;)
