On another post thier was a mention that Jeff Cooper preferred the "Thumper" for close combat. Anyone know what that is?

Thnaks for any info, Blue Duck

Cooper wanted to design a rifle for soldiers who were not primarily shooters, such as tank crews. The main need is for something compact and decisive to 200 yards. In his book "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" (if you haven't read it, do so) he described "Thumper", a semi-auto firing .44 AutoMag rounds, with an 11" barrel, folding stock, iron sights and 20 round magazine. There have been several faltering attempts to actually build it, but apparently nobody has actually followed through on the project (that such a short-barreled rifle would be subject to a $200 transfer tax and tight BATF regulation is likely a discouraging factor).

"Thumper" was a Swedish concept...

reviewed by Col. Cooper in the October, 1980 edition of Soldier of Fortune magazine. The gun, which only existed in a couple of prototypes in caliber .221 Fireball and Cooper's preferred caliber of .44 AutoMag, was the design of Bertil Johansson, of Malmo Sweden, an employee of the (then Swedish-based) AimPoint company. The gun had an in-the-grip magazine, folding stock, and came with an 11 or 16" barrel and compensator. It looked a lot like a Terry carbine, and a bit like an Uzi. It was envisioned as a cop piece, hence the nomenclature of the design: PC80, for 'Police Carbine, 1980'. Like the Scout and the 10mm D&D pistol, the Colonel's idea was a hard sell, and the idea died aborning. He tries to resurrect it every few years...most notably in TRSS&STT.

Well, FWIW, it a Co-Pilot by Wild West Guns (a lever action 45-70 carbine) sounds like it'd fit the bill. In fact, if I've read a rave review or two of it in Cooper's Commentaries about them...

IMHO, the breakdown model with Scout Scope setup is particularly "spiffy".

YeeDude-
Jeff has no use for the scope version of the CoPilot as it adds nothing but weight to the mix. The piece is good to 200 yards, at the outside; probably closer to 120 or so, practically. At those distances, glass adds nothing to the mix.
