im getting my first handgun for target and eventually ccw. money is a big issue for me. im looking for a handgun have not decided on a revolver. probably .38 special or a 9mm semiauto. which will be cheaper to feed for the range. also gettin a walther p22 for fun. any comments?

In my area, 9mm is BY FAR, cheaper to shoot than .38.

In the last week, I've purchased both types of ammo.

Cheapest I've found 9mm was just under $9/box of 50. Blazer Brass at WalMart.

Cheapest I've found .38 special was right at $15/box of 50. Remington/UMC at WalMart.

Local gun shops want atleast $5/box more for .38, and atleast $3/box more for 9mm.

When you look at cost per round the 9mm is usually cheaper. If you look at cost per shooting session I'd say the .38 typically wins. From what I've seen, folks tend to burn through a box of 9mm faster than just about anything else (including .22lr).

9mm is cheaper for factory ammo around here. But if you decide to reload, .38s are easier and it is easier to recover your brass.

In my neck of the woods, 9mm can be found (sometimes) at Wally Mart for $8.97/50 Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ. WWB range packs of 100 9mm hover around $20 (found 'em in MO at $21.99, here in IA for $19.99). The cheapest box of .38spl is $14.99/50 Rem UMC 130gr FMJ. I am looking at reloading .38spl because I can reload 100 just a bit cheaper than buying 100rds of factory 9mm.

Even at the hilariously inflated ammo prices right now, I can still buy 9mm for what it would cost to reload--but I don't lose precious hours at the press. YMMV

9 MM has normally been cheaper but when all this shortage of ammo clears up time will tell. I just got two box's of WWB (Winchester white box) 9MM in 100 pack for $39 at Wal-mart yesterday. But that was the first 9MM I have seen in that store or any Wal-mart in months:)

I'd love to find 9mm for $9 a box. Around here both 9mm and .38 will run you about $20 a box for either one. That's just LRN too. HP are a couple of dollars more. and JHP are about $5 more a box here. But that's Illinois for ya. one of the most anti-gun states there is.:barf::mad:
