a friend has gave me an nef r92 22lr with 4inch barrel to fix, its fine mechanically but it has specks of rust everywhere. even down in the crevices, and the cylinder has a few small holes in it from the rust. i thought of using a wire cleaning brush with solvent and oil then just blue it. however i have heard of permatex rust treatment that destroys rust then coats the metal to protect it. with the cylinder like it is i'm leaning toward permatex but i haven't used it before. what do ya'll think? thanks

Permatex rust treatment puts material on the metal, adds dimension, and never fully hardens. The best and only way is to stop the rust first by either blasting or sanding, then reblue.

Have you weighted the price of the gun vs what it will cost to fix? You might get most of the rust off with 0000 steel wool and some light oil.

he said he didn't want it, cause of the rust he said it will never be as good looking as before. thats true but as a woods gun i don't need a showroom piece to carry either. so he said if i fixed it, it was mine. so i need to know what would be the easiest but best way to fix it. the cylinder is pitted slightly but not deep, would oil and a bronze or copper brush clean it well enough to reblue? the rest of the gun isn't rusted to the point to have pits, just has alot of tiny rust speks. so for free i can afford a little time and little money to have a shooter, the cylinder lockup is solid and timing perfect. thanks
