What's an SLR?

I've heard my friends talking about it but I never knew what it stood for or what it meant.... Is it a specific weapon? Are their different meanings to the acronym?

Well, in photography it would mean Single Lens Reflex, as in your eyepiece view is actually looking through the lens of the camera as opposed to a viewfinder type sighting system. But enough of that. Gee, how I hate being a know-it-all!

I believe your friends are referring to Shoulder Launched Rockets. A man-portable rocket launching system.

It may stand for an early military term for 40's and 50's era Self Loading Rifles as in the Garand, the FN49, SKS and so on. I believe I've heard the inch pattern FN Fusil Automatic Legere (sp?) refered to by the Brits as an SLR

I'll second Rusty on this one and the British still use the term today: Self Loading Rifle. Hey, maybe it's a kinder, gentler way of saying semi-automatic!

I think Marcus46 hit the right answer ... your friends are almost certainly discussing this variant of the AK-47. Here is a page with info and photo from AK47.Net:

I don't have any personal experience with them, but they seem to have a good reputation as a recent AK-47 variant.

Greatest race car ever built, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, "super light racing" that won the Mille Miglia in record time driven by Stirling Moss, but also known for involvement in the greatest racing disaster in history when one crashed into spectators at LeMans in 1955 killing 84 including the driver.

Firearms-wise, I think you already got an answer....

I'll fall into line behind Rusty, Marcus, Gary and Jeff. SLR = Self Loading Rifle.

The SLR-95 is one of the sweetest shooting AK variants around. Bulgarian made with a milled receiver, not one of those stamped sheet-metal things like you usually see. The SLR is capable of 1-1/2" groups at 100 yds. Pretty good for a 16" barreled gun. It is considered the most accurate of the AKs. (Of course, that ain't sayin' much as AKs aren't known for MOA accuracy.)

Going price is anywhere from $600 up to about $800 (sometimes more depending on your location). YMMV

The only rifle I know of that was universally yclept the SLR was the Australian L1A1 in 7.62mm (.308)

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>L1A1 Rifle - SLR

Length - 44.5"
Weight - 9.5lb
Calibre - 7.62mm
Rifling - 4 Groove r/hand
Operation - Gas & Spring
Feed - 20 Round Box
Muz. Velocity 2800fps
Sights - 600 yards

By the late 1950's the Australian Armed Forces decided to adopt a new self loading rifle firing the standard NATO cartridge. After extensive tests it was decided to adopt the Belgium FN rifle, which was already in use by many other countries and this, with a number of modifications became the L1A1. The Australian version was a self loader only and did not fire bursts, (however an automatic version, the L2A2 was adopted by Australia and was used mainly by the Navy as a section light machine gun, but was often unreliable and prone to stoppages.) The L1A1 was gas operated and capable of thirty or forty well aimed shots per minute and was generally a sound and reliable weapon. Its principle disadvantage was its length especially in close jungle fighting and operating from armoured vehicles. The SLR is now out of service and has been superceded by the new 5.56mm STEYR Individual Weapon.[/quote]
