What's a good long range rifle to complement my collection

I have a variety of weapons; handguns, shotguns, and an AKM. I figure I'm good out to 100-150 yards, but I don't have anything that can really reach out and touch. I'd like to get a rifle with an effective range out to 500+ yards. I'd like it to be relatively simple in form with easy to find and replace components and common, readily available ammunition. I want it to have sufficient stopping power to take out most game in North America but not be too heavy. I'd like it to be rugged, durable, and relatively inexpensive, scoped under $1,000. What do you think would be my best bet?

what are you shooting past 500 yards? target or hunting?
if hunting what are you hunting?
i feel it would be safe to say a 300win mag at the least for just about any game in north america, iam currently building a sps 300 win mag(around500bucks) into a AICS (around 700bucks) with a ss10x (300bucks) over a grand but should be a solid build and not too expensive if you reload. if you already have optics then your a bit over 1000bucks..
With consistant ammo or handloads would be better and solid data you should be fine out to 1100 yards but i would opt to stay inside 800 for ethical reasons unless you get comfterble at those ranges.

+1 Win 70, add Rem 700 or Savage 10/110 series. Caliber 30 06, 308, 270

Those rifle models have the largest selection of after market upgrades, solid resale. Those calibers have readily available inexpensive ammo. Personally I'd like one each. I have the Savage 270, just need a Win 70 in 30 06 and a Rem 700 in 308. Then, bring on the Huns;)

Remington and Savage are two of the most accruate out of the box rifles you can buy in your price range (I'm including a good quaility scope and mounts). Both have a good following meaning lots of aftermarket parts are available although the Remington leads in that department. As for a cartridge with "sufficient stopping power to take out most game in North America" and "an effective range out to 500+ yards" I would look at the 7mm Remington Mag.

Thanks Guys. I'm going to start doing my homework on the three and find out what suits me the best. I appreciate the quick responses. It's primarily going to be target shooting since I don't get to go hunting much. I want it to have sufficient stopping power at long distances just in case I ever get the chance to go. I don't really know any hunters so I've never had the opportunity to learn how to hunt. I've really enjoyed teaching myself how to shoot handguns and shotguns. I got an AK recently and shooting it has given me the bug. I want to learn how to hunt and figure the first step is to get a long gun appropriate to the task. The AK would be a good hog gun from what I've read and I'm sure I'll take it out, but I want a rifle that'll do several hundred yards. Next is going to be how to find someone willing to take a newbie out. I'm in North Texas so it shouldn't be tooooo hard.

.308

I'm a .308 fan, and +1 to all the comments on Savage 10/110 family. Lots of models from sporters to full blown match rifles.

Also, not directly related, but..... all rifleman, aspiring and accomplished, should have a good .22!

Today's world? I'd browse hock shops for a good used bolt action in .308 and take up reloading with good used gear from gunshows or such as Craig's List. Save a ton of money if you're any good at bargaining.
