what's a good CCW weapon?

Read that some lawyer went and got himself a CCW and then got fleeced at the local gun shop. Got himself a Berreta with hi-cap magazine.

I liked firing a Berreta 9mm at the range. I hear the range operator saying that Glocks are near indestructable. They are both way too big for concealed carry.

What does the experienced people recommend for concealed carry? Which pistols? Which knives?

An open question.

A full size gun can be carried as concealed. I carried a 1911 for a while. And know of a few that carry full size no problem. But I have switched to a G-26 (Glock make a sub-model) and sometimes Colt detective special. I also had a Combat Commander, I carried for a while. Should have held onto that one. Oh well.

yy, Glocks are indeed tough as nails (and very sweat and dirt resistant). They come in three basic frame sizes, only the full size frame would be considered too big for CCW by some. The full, compact and subcompact Glocks cover all good defense calibers in three sizes. I carry a compact frame (Glock 19) all day long without concealment problems. The Glock 26 and 27 are very small for full-power guns in 9mm and .40 S&W.

The best CCW gun is the biggest caliber you can accurately shoot in the biggest frame you can comfortably carry and conceal. There is no miracle gun that fits the bill for everyone, but if you like 9mm (like me), you could do a lot worse than getting a Glock 19 or 26. The H&K P7M8 is a fine, small CCW piece too. Berettas in 9mm Para are generally a bit big, but some folks like 'em...they are certainly quality guns.

I carry a Beretta 8040 IWB holster by Fist,
I also carry a Bersa .380 IWB holster by Uncle Mikes and I also carry a Colt Detective
Special in a Bianchi shoulder holster.
Thats what I like. All these are good shooters and have had no problems with them.
I really like the Beretta Cougar line.
Hope this helps

Happy Shooting :)

For deep concealment, such as during the summer months, I would recommend one of the Micro Kahrs -- either the MK9 or the MK40 worn in a belly band. When the weather is a little cooler (or colder), I would go with one of the tactical compact pistols from Smith & Wesson -- either the 3913TSW or the 4013TSW.

I prefer a 642 for pocket carry or
a Glock 26/27 in an IWB.

As for a knife, after taking the Insights
Defensive Knife Class - I buy their logic
that a Sypderco Delica is just fine.

I have a Springfield Armory Ultra – Compact .45 . a Glock 19, and a Glock 26. All conceal well with a proper holster / rig. There are many factors in finding what is best for you.

YY...

I guess the real nswer to the question is...

Whatever you have... Any gun is better than no gun. So many things factor into this question, there just isn't any one answer...

Decide on what caliber would be your minimum acceptable. Then decide on a style that you prefer... Some like SA autos such as the 1911, which would include me, and I am comfortable with a Commander for concealed use.

I am not the biggest guy on the planet, but hiding a Commander hasn't been a problem.

A Glock 26/27/33/30 sub-compact is a great choice in the DAO category... For DA autos, Sig makes some great ones... I was looking at a Kahr MK40 yesterday, and might consider adding one of these to the collections as well...

With the right rig, and cover clothing, you can hide about anything...

My lawyer neighbor buddy was the one that got shafted. Nothing against the Berettas, they are nice pistols, but a full-size Beretta is a bit much for a professional enviroment (suit and tie). He would've been better served with a Kahr MK-9 or compact 1911.
To answer your question, IMHO, the pistol fall into this criteria:
1. How comfortable it feels for you
2. Reliability
3. Accurate
4. Caliber no smaller then .38 special
5. Small enough to conceal (doh!)

Which gun depends on your preference but they should meet the above requirements. I myself prefer 1911's. Many prefer the compact Glocks. Which is the perfect conceal pistol depends on YOU.

Knife wise, I don't carry a knife but when I was in the service, I carried a SOG Seal Pup and Pentagon.

Great replies here. My personal carry pieces are a Glock 23 or occasionally a Taurus 85UL .38 snubbie. Both conceal excellently.

My wife uses a Coronado Leather gun purse, and prefers wheelguns. Today, she's packing the S&W 66 .357 with a four inch barrel.

yy- I have a Glock-26 for CCW/car. I keep a Glock-21 beside my bed. If me or my kids are threatened, I know that my Glocks will fire and hit what they're pointed at. Best 2 purchases I ever made. Just my 2cents...

Thank you all. You've posted some fine information here. I live in California. If one day I finally get my CCW permit, your experience here will be valuable.

With a quality holster/belt and some discretion, you can make almost anything disappear. At 5'6' 170 I could make a USP45F with nothing but an untucked T-shirt disappear when wearing a holster that worked. Had to be carefull how I bent over and reached for stuff, but it worked for a long time. On the contrary, I cant make a G19 disappear with a sports coat and a POS holster. Obviously if you have to be active in public and in heat where wearing a coat is not an option smaller sized guns work better than cannons. Find a reliable gun that fits your hand well in a caliber you can shoot accurately and can practice regularly with and then buy a quality holster for it.

One that goes BANG when it's supposed to?
