Whats a good aftermarket rifled slug barrel?

Ive got a 870 and know there are a few rifled slug barrels to choose from. What do most people who are in the know like or choose, and also, if im shooting with a rifled slug barrel do i only need to shoot sabot slugs or unrifled slugs (if those are even made)? I just need something with good sites on it too.

Also, what slug do you all like out of this type of setup. Ill be bear hunting.
 
Besides Remington Rifled barrels available as aftermarket, Mossberg make a rifled barrel for the 870 also, additionally it is a lot less expensive too. For rifled barrels I have had the best luck so far with Rem Copper Solids and the Lightfield. Others range from real close to not in the park. You will just have to try some and see what your gun will shoot well. Unrifled barrels, I would go with the Brenneke slugs
 
Does anyone know where to get police trade in barrels?

My existing 870 police trade in barrel likes the foster type slugs but its a smoothbore cyl.
 
Thanks for the replies. I decided to go with a hastings barrel but at $254 shipped from cabelas, its kind of pricey. I also ordered some 3" federal premium vital shock, and some hastings laser accurate ammo. The barrel i ordered was the "rifle site paradox" fully rifled barrel with open sites. like this:

Hastings makes the best slug barrels you can buy 'off the shelf', you won't regret it.

Pick up a good assortment of slugs, find out what it likes. There isn't a bad 12ga slug ballistically, so try all you can.

Take a friend or three that is a good shooter, testing slugs is a lot like getting your butt whooped if you do it by yourself...
 
I got the barrel today from cabelas... i am going to clean it with a bronze brush and a bore snake but wanted to ask this.

It looks like it was stored for a long time and has some small rust spots on the inside of the barrel near the muzzle's end, just a little gunk looking stuff. Cleaning this out looks like it will create some small pitting. I dont think this would affect accuracy that much as the bullets are encased by plastic. (sabot)
But wanted to get some other perspectives. Im inclined to keep the barrel and not mess with sending it back... what do you think?
 
I would clean it and send it back if the bore isn't pretty. You paid for one in new condition, not one with marks in the bore.
 
Alright, I did clean the heck out of the barrel inside and out and it cleaned up better than expected. There was only one small pit near the end of the muzzle on the inside of the bore.
So I took it out to do some testing... only had time to shoot 5 shots because some people that work for the state do the monthly cleanup the morning i was there.
I shot 4 shots of the hastings laser accurate ammo and only 1 of the vital shock. From the get go all shots were on bullseye at 30 yds...i know these barrels are capable of around 100 yd shots but, from the factory it was on the money at this short distance...

Also, it was fun shooting the slugs. The gun had more kick with the loads i used than any other gun ive ever shot. The biggest being a 444 marlin and 45-70. Felt recoil was pretty serious. :)

Shot at 100 yds today...the barrel w/ open sites is awesome...very easy to get good groups down range. The hastings laser accurate rounds kicked harder than the federal vital shock... The hastings bullets were also all around the bullseye, while the federal was shooting about 8 inches higher. Im sticking with the hastings as it was dead on at 30 yds and seemed to be right on at 100 also.

Overall impression after two outings from someone who has never shot a slug gun (make it two outings now) - i was very impressed at accuracy of this screw on, easy on/easy off detatchable barrel. I already trust myself taking shots with it, amazing accuracy...shot where i pointed.

That is EXACTLY why I suggested taking a couple good shooters with you to help find out what slugs the barrel likes. Testing just a couple brands of slugs can feel like getting your hind end whooped....
