What's a good aftermarket magazine for an original WW2 issue 1911?

Why aftermarket? Real USGI magazines are pretty available.
If you just must, the Checkmate blue 7 shot with hardball lips is pretty close. A bit too shiny, is all.

Try eBay, Sarco, Numrich, Gunbroker, Aim Surplus, and any one of several dozen other online dealers.

Chip McCormick mags for 1911 have never failed me.
I have four that must be at least 20 years old.
They've been dropped in or on every surface imaginable, in every kind of weather and, so far, haven't needed any attention other than cleaning.
They're available in various capacities and at very reasonable prices.
Everyone sells them.
I'm sold - can you tell?

Doesn't really matter if it's a W.W. II vintage 1911A1 or the most recent Colt. If it didn't come with the pistol it's aftermarket. McCormick mags have a stellar reputation. Not all 'G.I. issue' mags are created equal either.
Gunparts wants $20.55 for a used 'issue' mag. $24.95 for a 'factory' mag. Doesn't say what factory.

I have a ProMag 25rnd drum, and its a piece of crap.

Does NOT feed at all.

Their stick mags might be better, but I wouldn't count on it.

The "period correct" mag for your 1911A1 is blued 7 rounds and says Colt or a FS # , or perhaps nothing at all, on the bottom.

WWII guns were in service from WWII till the 80s, some a bit beyond, so any mag (7rnd) the military had during those years is essentially correct.

For use, there are many good mags (and tons of crap). 8rnds is common today, but not GI correct.

What about Promag 10 rnd.?
I'm not a ProMag fan and 10rd 1911 mags can be iffy, the only ones I've had that are reliable are McCormick. I'd stick to 7 or 8rd if I were you.

Metalform and McCormick both make quality reliable 1911 mags at reasonable prices, any matte blue mag with a metal base plate will look appropriate in your pistol.

It's a good solid WWll 1911, it doesn't need boutique magazines. Go to the CMP's website: ODCMP should get you there, and buy US GI issue mags for $8 a piece. The limit is 10 and that's what I bought; still in the gov't wrappers, new. All were and are first rate. Rod

Watch buying off of EBay. Lots of stuff listed, and lots of stuff not exactly kosher.

I bought a bunch of what "looked" like factory Colt and GI mags off there, and once I got them, it was obvious that all were counterfeit, or not correct. Pay close attention and ask a lot of questions.

One thing with GI mags you need to watch, there are counterfeit mags out there, and there are "surplus" mags that are not in spec. Just because they are "surplus", doesnt mean it was a surplus/overrun of good mags. They could be rejects that were refused, and are being sold as "surplus". Ive run into that with mags, bullets, and a few other things.

Good, original GI mags were always my best bet with my 1911's. Colt mags are usually good too. Regardless, you still always have to proof test them, no matter what they are.

Too, the OP has a WWll 1911 that shouldn't need $40 magazines to get it to run. AK's comments are all on point, I should add...and the CMP mags I bought were all new in the wrapper with Gov't part numbers etc. Rod

A few more questions about this 1911 guys! Is there a sight upgrade that will not affect the originality of the gun? And is there a good hollow point round that works well in this gun or is it best to stay with FMJ? Thanks Guys

If its a USGI gun, I wouldnt mess with it. The best sight option for the 1911's that came with "staked" sights, is to have the front sight dovetailed. But that will likely kill any value the gun may have. Best way to go for a front sight though.

HP's will likely be hit or miss. All my older Colts and GI guns required what was called a "reliability package" or a "throat and polish" to help them feed anything but ball reliably.

Personally, Id leave it alone and just shoot ball out of it and enjoy it. Plenty of other 1911's out there if you decide you really like it and cant live without it.

Dang it, you mentioned the pistol and did not show a picture. Show a picture as appreciation for all the help. :(

We like seeing pictures of old war horses.

Remington Golden Saber has a rounded ogive that usually feeds reliably in 1911s that choke on other JHP ammo.
