What's a 5.7mm Johnson?

The January American Rifleman reviewed a current production M1 carbine and mentioned it may be offered in 5.7mm Johnson aka .22 Carbine.

What's the history of this round? Is the namesake the same as for the M1941 Johnson rifle?

Thanks in advance

Its a .22 caliber cartridge made from a .30 carbine case. Ballistics are somewhere between a .22 Hornet and a .222 Remington.

Its interesting but not very useful. I think it was only loaded with a 40 gr bullet at 3100 ft/second and since pressure limit is 38,000 PSI, its no match for the Remingtons.

Yes this round was designed by the same Col. Melvin M Johnson. As for being useful I think the round is better than anything I have seen proposed for the new Nato PDW (personal defense weapon). For hunting it would be about right for turkey or racoons. It also has about twice the useful range of the .30 carbine.

The Army tested M2 carbines firing the carbine case necked down to take a .22 caliber FMJ bullet. They consideredmodifying all carbines in the inventory ,but this was rejected due to cost of rebarreling.

I was sharing a description of the 5.7mm Johnson when she asked if it was similar to the "Angry Inch": doesn't go in very deep, but bangs the heck out of the sides! :D
