my question is when was this gun made? i have looked all over the web

Can't give you a date. But here's a bit of info for you: Numrich Arms' catalog #26 says that the Sears 101.40 was built by Stevens/Springfield (both affiliated under Savage...not sure of the relationship) over the years. Apparently, a change from one manufacturer to the other was made at some point during the era that Sears offered the model.

Also, Numrich (e-gunparts.com), does appear to have some small parts for the gun in case you need some replacements:

Proofhouse shows the following:

Sears Model 101.4 Model 101.4 is the Springfield model 947,D,Y
Sears Model 101.4 Model 101.4 is the Stevens model 38
Sears Model 101.4 Model 101.4 is the Stevens model 940,D,Y,DY

Don't have much more than that unfortunately - but you might be able to do some checking and see when they were made by Springfield and Stevens

when did sears stop selling guns? i am only 24 so i am sure it was before my time

i do remember when western auto sold firearms

Even JC Penney and Wards sold guns. Bought a great new Citori when Penney's caved to the antis and got out of the gun business. IIRC, it's been a bout 20-25 years now since most of those places stopped

That's about right

Yup, I've got two of those old side by sides. 1 from Western Auto 20 Ga, and one 12 ga. Sears. The Western Auto (Revelation) is about 35 yo and the Sears (JC Higgins) just had it's 50th birthday. Both are actually Stevens 311s the Sears being the nicer gun.
And for my xmas present my first "nice" shotgun a Win 101 12 ga. O/U can't wait, pics will of course be posted. I'm rather fond of doubles.
