What will be the fond memories in 30-40 years?

After reading another thread here that spoke of reminiscing, I began to wonder what the next generation will have to look back fondly on today. So let's pretend that it is 30-40 years in the future and we are all looking back to the year 2000. What do you think will be the warm, fond memories of today? I'll start the ball rolling.

I remember when:

The Internet wasn't taxed and regulated. You could pretty much say or do what you wanted to do without repercussions from The Man. It must have been what true freedom was like 200+ years ago in this country.

Only 50% of my paycheck was devoured for federal, state, and local taxes.

Some politicians at least ACTED afraid the voters' wrath.

Etc., etc., etc.

Well, bein' 65...

I kinda see "now" as a fork in the road. If we continue down the political liberal road, I think that in 40 years we'll be looking back on the days when we were a world power and were independent of other peoples' wishes. Ownership of our major corporations will be mostly foreign, and our economic pyramid will be flatter--more folks on the bottom. From that, I'd venture more of a police state, with little semblance to free movement without permission. Forget things like hunting or IPSC, much less self-defense.

If we veer off toward a more politically conservative leadership, we won't avoid more centralization of federal power, particularly, but we would be more likely to retain our position as a world power. The central government would not be as paranoid about the citizenry, and thus rights and freedoms would not be as much at risk. However, easy-living in this country is so easy, we would still see some changes in the economic pyramid. I think more people would be emotionally comfortable down in the lower levels. Dunno fer sure.

When we could go to Canada or Mexico with minimal trouble.

When we could brag about getting a 30-30 for deer instead of keeping very quiet about an M3 for other targets.

When we could teach kids without worrying that their indoctrination elsewhere would win over and you would end up imprisoned or shot.

When you could buy a gun that doesn't have to recognize you before it will fire.

When you could withdraw over $1000 from your own bank account without government intervention.

When it was rare for a "no-knock" warrant to be issued for tax offenses.

When cars didn't have radio cutouts so the cops could kill the engine remotely.

When you could keep your guns at home instead of locked at the club.

When television shows were mostly funded by private corporations.

When you could be cleared of murder charges if you could prove that the other guy was attacking you with deadly intent.

I'm in a pretty foul mood tonight. Missy just left to go back to her home 3 hours away and I've been reading depressing threads ever since. Take this as my pessimistic post.

A time when the Federal government couldn't automatically withdraw quartely tax payments from your bank account via EFT.

A time when you could buy a box of ammo, and not have it have to go through NICS. Microengraved serial numbers on each bullet ensure owner accountability.

A time when people still remembered how to drive and could still read a plain old paper map, instead of constantly checking their dashboard mounted GPS.

A time when cell phones were still hand held, rather being implants.

A time when some people still had analog watches, and on a sunny day could use that watch to find due south.

A time when you didn't pay a 30% 'sin' tax on anything remotely 'bad' for you. Eat that ice cream while you can.

A time when knives could be purchased by mail order and delivered directly to your door.

More... but I'll stop now.

Cool thread, DAL. Thank you.

You will brag that you bought an SKS for $99 and ammo at $99 per thousand and nobody will believe you.
AND you might claim you had a carry permit and they will laugh.
You'll pull up your pants and claim you actually had guns IN your house and they will roll on the floor.
You'll kick yourself for not buying those M98 Mausers for $100. And for a real big laugh you'll tell em you made your own ammunition IN the house as well. You'll slay em.
And just wait when you take out a "hunting license" and they think you got it at a novelty store.
You can brag you even had a car that burned gasoline.
When you figure out what happened you'll go to a pay phone to call your legislator. You will have to dig out the $1,230 to put in the slot to make the call.

In 40 years, statistically speaking, I'll be a memory. Hopefully, it will be a fond one...
