What weight .223 for 1 in 9 twist?

I certainly don't consider myself the "know-all, end-all" of ballistics - but my experience would indicate that with 1:9, you can easily handle any of the 55 gr loads and go up to 68 gr. with no loss in bullet stability or loss of accuracy. Much more than 68 gr. and you may start to see some "tumbling".

Stability in a certain twist barrel is determined by the LENGTH of the projectile, not the weight. Hornady IIRC makes a 60 gr varmint bullet that shoots just fine out of my 1/12 twist Colt AR15 SP1. So you really need to check the length. A good guide to use though is what commercial bullets they have fired well. I get acceptable accuracy from 40 to 69 grains in my Bushmaster with 1/9 twist. Never tried 70 grain or higher though.

I only Shoot 62gr bullets out of my Mini it inproves accuracy greatly. 55gr bullets can spread from 3-5 inches and the 62gr spread from 2-3 at most.
 
1-9 is a universal twist rate which will digest both ligh and heavy 55-62 or other
the 1in7 is good for heavy 62 grain
and the 1in12 for 55 grainers
the lenth is also important
but the loong bullets are usaly match or some ballistic tip
which go for 20 bucks a box (1 buck a pop) too expencive for me plus some of them don't fit into the mag ut go into the chamer if u hand load them one at a time
i'm not intrested semi auto turned "bolt action"
