I would love to hunt deer with a rifle, but here in the antigun state of illinois you are not allowed to hunt with a rifle. Thats why I use a handgun.

My primary hunting rifle is a Rem 700, .270 Win, with 2-8x Balvar 8b. It's in a used HS Precision stock. The rifle has made 3 1/2" groups at 450 yards with hunting reloads. It's taken a deer every year I've owned it...about 15 years or so. Ranges have been between 30 and 400 yards.

This year, it shot one through the heart area at 234 measured yards, as the deer crossed a narrow snowmobile path. It dropped and died within 50 yards, the 130 grain Ballistic Tip performing perfectly.

PRIMARY is a rifle... Win 70 .264 Mag.

But I almost always carry a handgun. Before now it was dad's .44 Blackhawk (Never did get anything with it).

THis year I carried my S&W .41 Magnum. I filled my Muley Doe tag with it :D Plumb happy. First big-game animal I have taken with a handgun... A lot of fun so I think I will try harder next year to get a buck.

A little off-topic, but sortof funny/amazing.

The fawn I shot got hit 3 times in the lungs and 1 time in the liver...never even flinched..Looked at me and sorta wandered a moment...By then I was getting a little panicked....I mean..I KNEW I was hitting it...Finally it staggered and dropped over...The lungs and liver were completely destroyed..

I assumed it would at least hump up, or move...or do something.. Anyway.:)

They are all Model 70 Winchesters,
Fave is a .243 Win Classic Stainless

Next Fave is a 30.06 Classic Boss

Currently carry mostly my 270 WSM Classic Ultimate Shadow:D:D
