What type barrel for slug or buckshot?

Currently I have two 870 Express, one has the 26 vent rib barrel with Modified Rem Choke and the other is an 18" fixed Cylinder choke barrel. Can I use slugs with the Mod Rem choke (for deer) or buckshot/slug with the fixed Cylinder (for home defense)?

What is the effective range of a slug with the 26" barrel? Is there a certain type of slug that is more accurate? Sorry for all the questions. I have never used slugs for hunting before. Thanks again.

That depends more on the shooter than the gun or the slug...

Probably, but the only way to know which slug is to try several brands and see which one does best in your specific gun. Every shotgun barrel is pretty much a law unto itself as to what it likes/how it shoots.

Slugs would perform best with the most open choke you have, so cylinder would be the one. I know Carlsons Choke company makes a rifled choke just for slugs. You could proably shoot sabot slugs, with greater accuracy. The link is below.

Home defense means close range, and any choke would do well at 5-15 feet.

For buckshot a smoothbore barrel (your choice on the choke) and for slugs, a rifled barrel with saboted slugs are best. Rifled slugs out of a smooth bore barrel are good out to about 50 yards. After that the accuracy is not good enough to waste the ammunition on. A saboted slug through a rifled barrel is good to about 125 yards if you have some kind of aiming device such as rifle sights, a red dot sight, etc. and not just a bead front sight.
