What to use on my rifle stocks?

Varnished stocks don't need anything to "preserve" them.
Oil finishes need more of the same oil, or a good furniture polish or wax

I use DemBart gunstock wax.. when I have it but good old Johnson's Paste Wax does the job just as well. [Talking wooden stocks here, and all of mine have hand rubbed oil finishes using DemBart Stock/Checkering oil].

The stock material and the existing finish is what matters.
No polish or wax on oiled wood. Just the oil is enough. Tung oil, for example, needs nothing but tung oil. Nothing else will penetrate the wood once the first coat goes on. BLO needs more on a regular basis. BLO isn't a great wood finish.
Polyurethane is plastic. Needs nothing but cleaning. Ditto for synthetics.
Varnish gets more varnish.

Oh yeah, baby!

Paste was. Go ahead and use Renaissance was, micro-crystalline was, beeswax, whatever wax you want. That is the right stuff. Putting BLO on an oil or varnish finish is trying to ruin it. Poly finishes can be waxed or wiped off.
