Guys, the thing to remember about shows like The West Wing, the MMM, HCI, VPC, CPHV, etc., is that _MOST_ of the folks involved mean well, but they're essentially clueless. They perceive that a firearm can be involved in a bad situation, and they make the jump from there to it being inherently bad. In case you haven't noticed, people in general are that way. We are all more likely to view things in terms of black/white, good/evil, etc., rather than in shades of gray... We're just wired that way.
The ONLY way to fight this sort of behavior is by education, and it has to be low-key education, because if you call up and start screamin' at the TV station, well...
Invite folks shooting, and not when you're going out for the express purpose of blowing up watermelons... Save that for Trip #2... Limit your arguments, but make 'em powerful. Be moderately indignant, but don't foam at the mouth. And whatever you do, don't launch into your basic conspiracy theory crap. It doesn't matter that history shows genocide as consistently following firearms confiscation - Folks are firmly convinced that it can't happen here, so they slap a crackpot label on you, and tune you out... Don't talk about 2nd Amendment rights, etc., since most of these folks haven't read the pertinant documents, and don't really understand the stuff... Instead, talk about personal freedom - A good thing to bring up is how most modern gun laws originated in the Jim Crow days, as a way to ensure a disarmed minority population - Go from there... One thing that worked on a hippie chick I used to date was "knowledge is power." After a trip to the range, she wanted her own 9mm...
Above all, keep your message simple, and keep welcoming the person. Invite 'em to go shooting. Invite 'em to send their kids over for a "don't touch, call an adult" class, whatever...
But overall, remember that these folks are largely clueless, and they want to HELP people. They're not evil and malevolent. They're just uneducated. And if we don't educate 'em, the unintended consequences of their actions are going to catch up with all of us.
