What to look for in a WASR 10?

I have heard good and bad. What to look for to know you have a good one? I have heard to get one from the 60's. How can you tell that? Are the Century Arm different from the Romanian ones or are they the same? Thank you guys.

Her baddaryl- the thing I would look for in a WASR-10 is raw awesomeness, which it fully delivers :) I currently own an AES-10B RPK, which was imported by Century (which yes, they are the same thing, Romanian AK's). One major thing is see the gun for yourself before you buy it. Some things to look for in all AK's is:

look for a canted front sight-look down the sights and see if they're nice and straight. This can be fixed, but it's a lot easier to find a rifle with straight sights.

Look at the magazine well. There is typically a little mag wobble with AK's, some side-to-side wobble is ok. Front-to-back wobble is pretty bad, just look for a slightly loose fit with metal mags, and a very slight wobble with polymer magazines.

Frankly, I think century gets somewhat of a bad rap (and I won't deny that I have seen some bubba'd guns from them- a 91/30 hex receiver with a side mount PU scope! ***?!?) but I think their rifles have improved, I am perfectly happy with my RPK.

Thank you. I have heard about the front sights. So just eyeball it for straightness? I have also heard about warped receivers. How common is that? Is it easy to spot?

One that doesnt have a canted front sight and one that works would be a good start. There is no way I would buy one if I couldnt put my hands on it first.

I recommend the WASR-10|63, I have it and it's pretty damn awesome. The quality is probably the best of the WASR bunch. They don't trigger slap (mine doesn't) and the barrels are chrome-lined.

You can tell if a receiver is warped sometimes by racking the bolt and seeing if the rails are not aligned but sometimes even the rails are put on goofy. I haven't seen that be a problem though with the CAI WASRs.

You could get a saiga and have a real Russian beauty with a chromed barrel that will be some bit better than the Romanians but you'd have to reconfigure the trigger group if you want the standard pistol grip configuration. They are easy though.

canted sights
gas tube sometimes bent
magazine wobble (the 10/63 fixed that)
only likes certain mags for some reason

just be warned that when you buy a wasr your going to be taking a gamble. looking over it will reduce the chance of getting a piece of trash, but all in all you need to fire the thing to be certain. i own a wasr 10/63, i have had no problems with it, but you will find all over the internet about people who beg to differ. if you want a well built, sturdy AK clone your best bet is to grab up something built by arsenal inc. Dont get me wrong, i like the wasr and wouldnt trade it, but im eventually going to grab something a little higher on the ladder

I am thinking it because there is one at a pawn shop local that I can get for less then $400 out the door. Obviously I can't fire it though. That is about all I can afford right now. I could kill myself for selling my SLR 95 in the 90's.
