I,m thinking about getting a new 357 revolver for Christmas, and would like some imput as what to get. I currently have a six inch python a six inch 686 no dash a 8 inch dan wesson and a 2and3/4 inch ruger speed six. Have been looking at a smith model 27and a gp 100 with four inch barrels. It would be mostly a range gun shooting full house loads. Any and all suggestions including other models will be appreciated
Thank You

I bought the GP100 4" just recently and have been shooting the crap out of it in double action. It has a better double action feel than both my model 28s and my model 57 and is easier to shoot double action than the Smiths I have.

The single action trigger isn't as good though, but it's not broke in yet. I wasn't sure I'd like the Ruger, I have always been a S&W snob, but I'm getting really warm and fuzzy with it. It's very accurate.

Maybe you should also consider looking at a 41mag or a 44 mag also. Of all my handguns, I prefer my 41mag to all of them, with handloading for it I can make it shoot as hard or as soft as I want and use it to hunt with if I felt like it. It added a new dynamic to my shooting where I was starting to get a little bored with my .357mags.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the gp 100 opinion, pleasantly surprised to hear that the double action is better than the 57. Wish I had one to try out. As far as 44s go, I am real deep in that area and have no need or wants there. I have no 41 magnum revolvers, as I figured the 44 was so close in bore size that the 41 mag seemed redundant. Maybe I should reconsider that. I don't hunt with a revolver, as I have a contender with 17 barrels from 22lr to 45/70 that pretty much covers any handgun hunting situation. If I can't do the job with a 500 grain .458 bullet out of the 45/70 a revolver probably won't help.

SW 627 vcomp, its my favorite 357 shooter, you wont regret it, I own a bunch of revolvers and its an awesome performer out of the box... My 686 competitor is also one heck of a shooter, but thats 6"...

I have a few of the model 27's ....and they are my all time favorite revolver in
.357 Mag - especially in a 4".

I have a model 27-2 4" Nickel...( made in 1981 I think ) ....and it has the smoothest double action I own ( and I have about 25 of the K, L and N frame S&W's )...solid lock up on it still / and I have thousands of rounds thru it.

A model 27 in a 4" ...is a classic I will heartily recommend !

I also invested in a premier grade, Freedom Arms, single action...with a 4 3/4" octagonal barrel in .357 Mag..../ its a gun that will fire a 1" group at 25 yds all day long with good ammo...and its fun to shoot as well.

Not what you asked about...but its a fun range gun as well worth considering for something different...and amazing craftsmanship and quality.

It sounds like you have a very nice collection. You may want to see if you can find a good older 586...or maybe a 586 or 686 with a 5" barrel.

You guys have convinced me. I'll get the model 27- 2 and the gp 100 and a model 57. What the hell, life's too shor,t and I'm too old to choose a compromise. I'll send the wife to visit her sister in Colorado and she'll never know. "Oh those guns dear, why I've had them for years."

There are lots of nice single action revolvers in 357, if you want a little more variety. My Ruger Blackhawk always makes me smile. :)

first donate for toys for tots, army emergency relief, marine corps relief society.....then buy the shiniest GP you can find. if you donate first, you'll probably find a better deal since the cosmic juju will be in your favor

Well those are all nice charities and should not be overlooked, but my attentions have lately been focused on people here that have lost their homes and have had their lives destroyed by hurricane Iselle and the Pu'u O"O lava flow and flood damage from the heavy rains. So most of my donations including my time and skills in electrical work, and some plumbing and carpentry on my weekends goes there. Moving an entire house if you have never tried it is a huge undertaking. I have not been shooting or reloading since Aug since my time is well taken up and I guess I started thinking about selfish wants. There is church, when able to attend and tithing. I also believe Make a Wish Foundation deserves my attentions. But you have made me rethink that perhaps I am being a little selfish in wanting a few new toys when so many of my neighbors are struggling. Your good fortune comment has hit home and made me rethink that I really have been blessed so much and really don't need so much especially when others have so little. Still will send the wife to visit her sister in Colorado though, Ha! Thanks and Merry Christmas.
