what to feed SP100?

What would you feed a 3 inch SP 100? I'll be buying factory ammo and I'd like recommendations for carry and practice in both .38 and .357. Thanks

I try to avoid PMC (much muzzle flash) and UMC (lots of bad primers in 9mm though .38/.357 seem fine). Fiocchi is my favorite brand when I can get it. Winchester works fine, too.

if you mean an SP101 Ruger maybe i can help. my revolver is a Weigland Combat conversion of the SP101 with a hybra ported barrel. i carry either Remington 125 grain SJHP's or Federal 125 grain JHPs. both are weel rated if you believe Marshall & Sanow, at 96%. the data base on the Federal load is much bigger at over 500 shootings. i suspect these shooting were with 4 inch service type revolvers though. if the 125 grainers rock your world to much you may want to try the various 110 grain offerings by the amjor manufacters. i saw one type from Winchester yesterday in a gun store. it was thier economy 110 grain JHP offering at 11.99 for fifty. the reason i like a SJHP is that a large amount of soft lead is exposed and if the hollowpoint fails to expand the soft nose of the plugged bullet will normally expand some increaseing it's effectivness. for practice i recommend you purchase a reloading set up and learn to roll your own. save your .357 sheels and load them lighter for practice and avoid the lead buildup in your cylinder that you would get from .38 Specials. barring that 3D reloads for 8 or 9 bucks for fifty is a good deal. shop around and be sure to look at the Bulk Ammo web site. a link to it is in the links at this site. good shooting

I carry a two and a half inch 686. The Winchester white box "USA" brand 110 gr hollowpoints are cheap and recoil is not as stiff as heavier bullets.
For practice I roll my own using 357 brass to avoid the short case leading problem.

I also have one of those Weigand SP101s, but I have two loads I like. Summertime loadout is 125gr. Gold Dots (Oooh YEAH!). Winter loadout is 180gr. Ranger SXT. Both rounds are somewhat stout, but the hybra-port really works.

I believe that the Remington 125gr. Golden Sabre are intended for use in snubbies.

That's what I carried in mine, anyway.

Riddleofsteel & Nyterunner; I am considering sending my Smith m640 to Weigand for the "executive" package. Please tell me just how loud the hybraporting is. Is it worth the reduced recoil? I once had a Taurus m605 with a ported barrel. I put over a 1000 rounds through it, but the blast felt like a slap to my forehead when I shot it. Thanks

I like the Fed,Rem,Win,Speer 110/125 357s in my 2 inch SP101 for carry. The 125/130 38s.

The 125 GS does about 1100, the 125s 1200, the 110s 1200 fps.

If there was any difference between the "cheap" Win USA 110 Mags and the expensive stuff, I couldn't see it on the screen or paper.

The Armscor 125 FMJ 357 was good "cheap" stuff for practice to.

In 38, the Fed, Win, Blazer, PMC are fine.
