What to do with 1500. M-96, FAL, or MIA?

I have a choice to make with about 1500. I have always wanted an M1A but the new M-96 looks interesting and I was able to handle one at a shop and it looks like a well made rifle. I have also being looking at FAL variants. The AR's are out, I don't care for the ones I have shot. I could also just buy three handguns or a desert eagle....Help me out.

Thanks.

The m96 looks cool but the parts availability probably sucks. M1as are great rifles so are FALs. What do you want to do w/ this rifle? Matches, plinking, defense what?

I think for matches m1A cant be beat. Fals have great great parts availability until the stuff from the new August ban starts to dry stuff up. You could get a great FAL already kitted up from arizonaresponsesystems.com for that kind of bread

orsogato - WRONG - PARTS for the M-96 are very easy to get.
You give them a call and they can have that part mailed out to you PRONTO-ASAP.
Seriously.

Keeper - Your talking about 2 different calibers. If your wanting a .308 - then you can not go wrong with an FAL. Simply the BEST there is in .308 right now.
For .223 the M-96 is a VERY good choice. Probably my Fist Choice, personally. Its about tied with the HK SL-8 rifle with the carry handle mounted dual gunsites. The only question would be what this is used for.
If just for fun, plinking and practicing and general all round use - the HK gets it. Because of the acceptance of the M-16 GI magazinings the M-96 would get my choice for a "Duty" gun. If fighting is a possibility with this rifle - you'll want them longer 30rd mags on tap.
Either rifle is SWEET.
Very Sweet.

George is on the money about caliber. Figuring out what you want to do with the rifle is first.

I also second the FAL for a .308. The magazines are still inexpensive, so you can get 10 or 20 and an FAL for a reasonable price.

For me, magazines are very key. I would much rather have a good gun with lots of mags than a great gun with two or three. Luckily, you can get a DSA or a custom built FAL and a bunch of mags - giving you a great gun and many mags. :D

Just my personal opinion, I would get a really nice FAL. I'm new to the FAL world but they have really grown on me.

George,

Ok I will stand corrected on the m96 parts availability. I was thinking more in terms of like compared to an AR or an m14 or FALs, parts are far more common from a variety of vendors.

If Keeper wants an all around .308 then FAL is probably the best. Our military should have adopted this weapon. The only area I thing the m14 is way better when you compare the two is the sights. The 14s are better than FALs IMHO. But the FAL all around I think is a better weapon.

Sorry, I have been sick and away from the computer for awhile. I wanted a gun that could be used for both plinking (fun) and duty (sort of a just in case TSHTF type of rifle) I think I have narrowed it down between the FAL and the M-96. I am leaning towards the M-96 but I am still not sure. From what I have heard the recoil is next to nothing on the M-96. I do like the .308 better for an all purpose round though. It is going to come down to deciding between the .308 and the .223 I guess. Thanks for the imput.

FAL vs. M1A, for me I originally liked the M1A better, but then I played with a FAL. It just seemed to fit me better. With mine reliability has been excellent, with neither myself or the previous owner having any malfunctions. (Except for one Cavim round that was horribly out of spec, it wouldn't even feed in my Ishipore, thats how bad it was). I like the adjustable gas system, just in case your gun gets really gunked up.

The M1A has better sights, but mine is scoped, so that doesn't really matter. Also I would say that the M1A is probably more accurate, as the FAL tends to string its shots vertically. But for all intents and purposes, I haven't noticed very much difference in accuracy.

Also mags are super cheap.

Either way your going to have a fun rifle, I have a buddy with an M1A, and he wouldn't trade it for anything. On the M96, I don't have a clue. But George took a tour of their factory and came away impressed. So which ever one you get it is probably a win/win situation. :)

Accuracy?
You wanna talk accuracy?
If your BENCHING the rifle - Accuracy is important.
Whats really important is the Practical Accuracy. You and your rifle combined and the ability to make hits with it.
For example - the above mentioned FAL. With a single cold barrel shot at a target of unknown range. Score: HIT.
Nuff Said. I'm not bragging up my skill - I'm just saying that the FAL is a sweet hitter. The M1A I fired that day - at a target of Known Range: Miss.
I can hit with a FAL. That's practical accuracy.
