what Sniper Rifle would you make

ok here it is you can make a Sniper Rifle out of any Rifle you would like, with any Scope that you like. so what would make your Sniper Rifle out of? now at this time as you all know i'am looking to git an M1A Rifle so i'd make my Sniper Rifle out of a Springfield Armory M1A Rifle and for a Scope i'd use a Springfield Armory 6x40 Government Model Scope. yes i know it's not a hi-power Scope for a Sniper Rifle but it's what i'd use:)

I'd have a remington 700 in 308 done up just like the M40. I'm not deluded into thinking this is still the best sniper rifle going but as it would only be for fun for me anyway, thats what I want.

Already have mine= Steyr SSG P-II with a 6x42mm Swarovski
sniper scope. I would like to get one of Accuracy International's AWMs in .338 Lapua topped by a 10x50mm Schmidt & Bender. Besides the sticker shock, it weighs a bit too much for me.

$$$$$
$teyr $$G-PII
Leupold M3A 10x40 ($1349)
$$$$$

Gotta remember, minimum engagement distance for a military sniper is 400 meters. Semi-auto rifles like the M1A/M14, HK91/PSG-1 get too expensive to make sub-MOA accurate.

expens is not what this Topic is about, yes it would be expensive to make an M1A/M14 or an HK-91/PSG1 or HK-93/HK-33 or an AR-15/M16 in to a good Sniper Rifle. but this Topic is about if you had the $$ and where going to make a Sniper Rilfe what would it be, and that is all that this Topic is about.

I don't think all the money in the world could turn a .223 into a "good" military sniper rifle. But, hey, I'm no expert... I'm sure .223 hurts just as much as a .308

forget these sissy semi-auto rifles

And get a Blaser R-93 or a Schmidt-Rubin K47/53 sniper.

The Blaser can be had with many interesting calibers, and of course
removable magazines.

Else, get me a straight-shooting Stgw57 (AKA SIG 510) and a scope. SIG
510's have been known to do sub-MOA with standard issue Swiss Army
ammo.

I wouldn't build or buy a thing. Already been totin' my pet for some 30 years and know what we have done at 450 and 500 yards. Bolt action '06.

From what's been posted here by folks shooting at 1,000 yards, I'd have to change the scope mounts. Build some angle in, for the cross-hairs to be near the center of adjustment travel at the longer ranges.

I guess change from 150-grain bullets to 180-grain SPBT.

Mosin-Nagant?

How about a scoped Mosin-Nagant M39 with a synthtic stock?

I know it's not a NATO round, but power-wise, doesn't it fall right between the .308 and the 30-06?

While I don't have a Sniper Rifle per-say, I do have my precision rifle which works just as well - Accuracy International AWP .308 w/Leupold Mark IV M1.

With all the options out there (and $$ no object) why build one when you can buy one? Unless because you want to build one.

Built one, then bought one...

For 1000 yard tactical work, I built a 6.5-06 Interdiction Rifle on a 1916 J.G. Haenel 98 Mauser action, using a Krieger barrel, Canjar trigger, Vais muzzle brake, titanium striker, heavy laminated stock, and the whole nine yards. It works as advertise, producing 1/4 MOA 5-shot groups from 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips zipping over 3200fps. It's even centerpunched a golf ball during a certain 500 meter tactical match in the Spring of 1999. Drawbacks? It's a handloading-only proposition, weighs over 12 pounds, and while simple and fairly rugged, is awfully pretty. I've got well over $1500 into it, including the necessary chambering reamer and dies.

Then for reasons only a gunhead would understand, I went and bought a .308 Remington 700 PSS from a wholesaler. (Feinstein and Boxer were ranting about sniper rifles at the time) I installed Leupold rings and bases, added a 4-16 Mil-Dot scope, adjusted the trigger, and left it alone. The darned thing shoots almost as tightly as the above rig, for a good bit less money, and uses off-the-shelf ammo. While I enjoy building one-off rifles, it'll NEVER be cost-effective to do so when excellent rifles like the PSS, VS, or Sendero come straight off the assembly line. You can still build one of your own, but it's gotta be something you want to do for reasons other than cost.

8200 rpm: you got it, if you shoot any one with a .223 it hurts and he will stop, unless he is some terrorist thats looking to git kill. a .223 will stop an one of gits shoot with it, it mit not kill them with the frist round but it will stop them.

Camo Robar QR2 .308 Rem 700 NP3ed action, McMillan Sako Varmint stock, harris bipod, Leupold VariXIII 3.5-10 x 42 Mk3 Long Range mil dot reticle, Leupold MK IV Rings and Base, M14 Mag conversion with (usually) 5 round mags, leather competitor sling, 19" fluted barrel, weight empty as above about 10lbs.

Reminton .300 Mag Sendaro with a tatical Leupold VariX 3 4x14 scope with a mildot reticle.

Exellent out of the box accuracy that will hold its own with any high dollar custom gun that Ive ever shot it against thus far.

And it will do it much cheaper.

I use a Nosler 180 grain Ballistic tip with 70 grains of 4350.

B27 targets out to 1000 yards are no problem.

That's a very subjective matter, but here's what I'm working on for my own rifle project:

Remington 700 Short action
AICS (Accuracy International) Stock
Kreiger 22" bull barrel with 5R rifling
Jewel HVR Trigger
Parker Hale Bi-Pod
Badger Ordnance QR Rings
US Optics SN3 2.6-12.2x 44mm

You should test the stocks and actions you feel most comfortable with and work with that.

What Sniper Rifle would I make ???

I too already have my short, medium, and long range tactical rifles.

Short: Armalite M14A4(T) w/ Leupold VariXIII 3.5x10 M1

Medium: Springfield M1A Supermatch, McMillan A3 stck w/ Leupold VariXIII 3.5x10 M3

Long: Rem 700 Sendero 300winMag in a fully adjustable H-S Precision Tactical stock w/Leupold VariXIII 6.5x20

These are the member of my "reach out and touch someone" group.

Dreams vs. reality

If I could have anything, it would be a Maadi-Griffin MG-6 .50BMG with a U.S. Optics SN-3 3.8-22x80mm scope.

Realistically, my project for early next year is a Savage 112 semi-heavy fluted barrel .30-06 w/ Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x50mm scope, Choate Ultimate Varminter stock and Parker-Hale style bipod (setup subject to change without prior notice! ;^) ).

I wouldn't build a sniper rifle. Those get bad press, and get banned.

I, however, am goin' back and forth with Paul Dorsey on a winter project. It's going to be a 1000 yard prairie dog/target rifle.

Action: Savage 110 (had it lying around)
Barrel: 8.5" twist Lilja 3 groove or Krieger HV contour, 29"
Chamber: 6.5/284 Shehane wildcat, throated for the 142 gr. Matchkings
Stock: Factory 110FP stock, unless I get radical
Trigger: Factory for now - got lucky and the factory trigger is halfway decent - will likely switch to a Timney 2 oz. later
Scope: For now, an el-cheapo 6-18x I had lying around

Total cost shouldn't be all that bad...
