what should the rifle be used for

I have a ruger 10/22 and i was woundering what game is the gun used for and what would it be able to take down....I have been hunting for years but this is with a bow...so any suggestions and will i need to get a higer powered rifle like the mini thirty for game or not...also could it be used for birds like pidgens(need to get them out of the barn)
 
I use my 10/22 to hunt rabbits and squirrels. As for the mini 30 for game, what kind of game are you talking about?
 
.22 WAAAAY too small for coyote and deer. Rabbit and squirrel sounds good, and your 10/22 should do great on those pidgeons.

The mini 30 would be up to the task of coyotes and fox, although there might be more pelt destruction then necessary on Mr. Fox.. Maybe deer, if the ranges are not too long and the deer not too large.
 
well i know the .22 shouldnt be used to kill a deer...but it just so happens bout 2 years back i shot a medium sized 4 pointer with the .22...it was close rang eand did take 3 shots but it worked and it was the best tastin deer ive ever eatin'
 
Yes, it worked out for you that time, but that doesn't make it ethical. I think you should resolve to never do that again. .223 or better for small deer. 7.62x39 or .243, or better for larger deer, minimum. I second what AZ fusilier said. The .223 would be good for the coyotes too, and the fox for that matter.
