What should I do with my new 870?

I just got a brand new 870 express HD gun and was wondering what to do now. Should I lube or clean it? Do I pump it or dry fire it to loosen it up? Any help will be much appreciated.

Break it down and give it a good cleaning and then just go and shoot it. If you dry fire it get you some snap caps for it. I always give my new guns a good wants over before shooting them.

It's simple to break down a shotgun. First check to make sure the gun is unloaded by pulling the pump arm all the back. Then push it partway forward so the chamber is halfway open. Next unscrew the the cap on the front end of the magazine tube. Finally slip the barrel off. reassemble in reverse order. Thats as far as you need to go for cleaning!

Read your owners manual completely. It has all the info you need on breakdown, cleaning, etc. Understanding how and why your gun functions is a big part in using it effectively and safely. Happy shooting!

A couple of steps for cleaning an 870.

1) make sure it is unloaded.
2) unscrew foreend cap.
3) Press slide release button in front of the trigger and slide the foreend back.
4) remove the barrel.
5) clean barrel.
6) Take a small nail and tap the pins out of the receiver.
7) Gently pull out the trigger group.
8) Clean trigger group.
9) Turn the receiver upside down.
10) identify the shell latches. There is one on each side of the receiver. They are the springy pieces of metal.
11) you need three hands for this next step. But can do it with two. Press the two shell latches in and gently pull the foreend forward until it is loose.
12) now you see a loose foreend with attached slide rails and two other pieces.
13) Degrease and lightly oil all this.
14) clean the grease out of the receiver.
15) put the two pieces that came out with the foreend back onto the forend. It fits in the grooves on the foreend.
16) Depress the shell latches and slide the foreend back in with the two pieces assembled on the slide rails of the forend.
17) Put trigger and pins back in. :)

Is it necessary to go through all of those steps to give it a cleaning because I dont know if I will put it back together properly If I take it apart. Can't I just clean the barrel and brush down the reciever or is there a bunch of grease in there that I will need to get out. I dont want ot take out the trigger group either.

I dont have my shotgun yet. I have put an order for one and wont have it for about 3 weeks, because the store has to get a new shipment.

YOU, sooner or later you're going to have to disassymble it. You really should take it apart and get the grease off of it first and then you'll know how to do it. The instruction book is very well detailed on how to take it apart. These guns aren't complicated.

The modular design of the 870 makes it one of the simplest and easiest repeaters to break down and reassemble.

Look for an old thread I started about breaking in new pumpguns for some input....

This is my first gun (I'm 15) and I have never taken apart a gun before. I was wondering If it comes out in large pieces or if it is a bunch of little tiny pieces?

If it's brand new get the manual out and read it at least once.

A simple break down is at least taking the barrel out of the receiver so you can clean it easier, takes about 15 seconds when you get used to it. Take your time and don't force anything, the nut on he end of the magazine is sometimes on tight so you can bear down to turn it off. Once you gain confidence you'll be able to tear the nentire gun down pretty easily.

Once the gun is cleaned of all the factory cosmoline lightly lube all bearing surfaces and go shoot it. I may not deep clean a gun more than once a year or so but I keep the barrel cleaned out and wipe down all the exterior surfaces. Iv'e gone as long as 3-4 thousand shells in some guns before a good cleaning. :D

Thanks, Anarx, Nice to know I'm helping folks.

TFL and THR happen to be the shotgun places on the Net with the best Signal to Noise ratio. Glad I am to be part of this.
