What should I buy next?

Ok guys I am new to handguns. I picked up the shooting bug about 3 months ago and now I am hooked. I have a Glock 19, and just recently purchased a Charter Arms Pathfinder 22LR revolver, in a couple months I'm sure I wanna pick up another handgun but I have no idea of what to get. I bought the 19 to get started and I really like it. I am pretty accurate with it up to about 25 yards. The charter is a fun plinking gun. IT's nice to be able to shoot 500 rounds and stay under $16.00. But I want to get something else. And thats all I know. What do you guys suggest? A few things I will be thinking about are....

Price of the firearm (would like to stay under $500, but I am cool with used)
Price of ammo (again doesn't have to be dirt cheap but I don't wanns be paying $3 bucks a round
Fun to shoot

And that's pretty much it. I am open to all suggestions. If you guys need further info to answer adequitly please feel free to ask.

Get a revolver, they have become my favorite guns to shoot! I have two Smith and Wessons so far, will be getting a 3rd soon.

You have those two guns only?

Assuming that, I think you should get a 22 rifle. All the same bonuses as the 22 handgun, plus about 4X the accuracy and an extra 300 fps of velocity for free.

I've had a Ruger 10/22, a Ruger 77/22, a Marlin 39A, and a Marlin 60. If I just had one, I'd pick the 60. I got mine used in a Georgia pawn shop for $135. A bit high, but it is a GREAT gun. 14 round tubular magazine, and very accurate. You'll be amazed to hear it, but the gun can keep all the rounds within 2" at 100 yards.

If it's got to be a handgun, I recommend a Hi-Power. It is a full size 9mm, the ammo will stay cheap, and you'll have a full size, steel-framed service gun with a longer sight radius, single action trigger, lower recoil, and in a classic Browning design.

I would suggest a .22 pistol or a rifle. aside from that a glock 26 if you're planning to get a concealed handgun permit. it can use the glock 19 mags so it makes a great companion to the larger glocks.

I suggest getting a .357 Magnum revolver w/4" barrel.

You can use it for HD, or hunting with full power magnum loads.

Light .38 Spl loads make for fun target shooting and training.

I'm completely with Smaug,

A 22LR rifle can be really fun, bolt action rifles are cheap and accurate. It can get you started in enjoying rifle shooting.

If it has to be a handgun, the HP is an excellent pistol that can be picked up fairly cheap in the used market. 9mm is also very cheap and as you already have a Glock 19, you could buy ammo in larger quantities, meaning better discounts.

Choose from the following:
1. .22 semi-auto: Ruger MKxxx or Browning Buckmark
2. 1911 in 9mm: STI Spartan or RIA
3. S&W .38: 14,15,67 with 4" or 6" barrel.
4. Reloading equipment: Hornady LNL
5. .22 rifle: CZ 452 Trainer or 452/453 Varmint

Good morning
I totaly agree with "Get a revolver" but get a Monson made Dan Wesson. Still the most accurate, affordable and very strongly built revolver. Swap barrel length in a couple minutes. Set yoiur own barrel gap and barrel tension. No other revolver offers that option.
The Dan Wessons have won more steel shoots than all the other revolvers and continue to do so.
Caliber .357 are more common but there are still plenty 44 mags out there and cost no more. Hard to beat success !
I have & shoot 5 calibers and may yet snag a 45 Colt.

If you're hankering for another handgun, then I'd suggest either a Glock 34 as a second 9mm or a Ruger MK II or Mark III as a second 22lr. The longer barrel and sight radius of the Glock 34 is great for target shooting and you could compete in practical pistol type events in the future.

If, however, you want to go with a 22 rifle, a Henry 22lr lever action rifle is an absolute hoot to shoot. I have a Henry, a Marlin Model 60, and two Ruger 10/22s and I like the Henry the best out of the box it has a buttery smooth action, great trigger, and great accuracy. Best of all its a lever action and just plain fun to shoot.

Now, if you'd like to go with a 9mm carbine sized rifle, a Beretta Cx4 Storm 9mm carbine is a fun gun to own, however, the prices of them have risen from under $500 to $650 - $750 in the past few years. A used one may be had that fits your budget.

Those are my suggestions in your existing calibers. If decide you want a different caliber, then the sky's the limit as you could consider a decent RIA or Remington 45acp 1911, an AR15 in .223, a 38/357mag levergun, or whatever.

If you have no clue what you want your not ready for your next pistol.
I don't think there are many on this forum who would not know what they would buy having $500 to spend.
Have you gone to a rental range and tried different pistols?

STI 1911 9mm. I love my Glocks but there is something about the 1911 that just draws me to them. If you try one, you'll love it. STI makes quality guns and the 9mm is reasonably priced. Be careful though; once you get a 1911 you'll be hooked!

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen. As always you guys are insightful and informative. I think I would like to go with different calibers than i have now, unless if course I went with a rifle or carbine then I will probably stick to with the .22 for it's cheapness to shoot. But i dont want to get too far off of the hangun talk on this forum, so that I make sure I follow the rules.

I like the suggestion of 357 Magnum, becasue of the option of being able to shoot 38 special when I want to have fun and then use the real fire power if I need it.

But I am still open to hearing any suggestions that you have. Keep em coming guys.

Thanks
T.W.

What ever you do, DON'T buy a 45 acp revolver or auto 1911. If you do you will be buying them for the next 50 years. The 45acp is the most addictive caliber out there . You've been warned!!! ;)

What do you guys suggest?

My suggestion??? You already have a practical firearm. Now, buy something that very few people have. Make it a quality firearm and not something that is too common.

I saw a really nice Steyr GB going in the $500 range on Gunbroker. it was in nice condition too. I'd consider something like that. Or, maybe an HK P7M8. Stainless CZ-75 would be a good choice also. I'm going to stop there, because the others that I'd suggest are hard to find and I'm actively looking for them.;)

Next Handgun

Hi tedles915:

Everyone should have a Smith & Wesson Model 10. It is the classic
revolver that has been around for over 100 years. The Model 10 is
balanced, fits the hand and shoots POA. J & G Sales has a number of
ex-police 10's in the $200-$300 price range. Their website is
www.jgsales.com.

Just an old man's 2 cents, for what it's worth.

If you want cheaper ammo (which I totally understand)I would suggest the
.22 whether you choose a pistol or a rifle (they are fun too!). I also think everyone needs at least one revolver so you might consider that as well.

1911 in .45 ACP. Get the new Ruger, or a Springfield Range Officer. I waited almost 25 years before getting my first 1911. Big mistake IMO. Went out last Friday with my new Colt and my P226 Equinox. 226 used to be my favorite semi-auto. Now it is a toss-up between the .40 and the .45. Wonderful guns.
