What should I be looking for when I purchase an Ar-15?

I am going to be purchasing an Ar-15 within the next few days and I am looking for some advice on what i should be considering.
What caliber is going to be readily available and cost effective in the near future? Make and model recommended? Advice of any kind is welcomed.

I haven't been on the Firing Line in quite awhile....to busy working.
