I have a Colt Police Positive Special. The reason I bought it was to learn about it and evaluate the possible virtues touted for the Colt Python (The P.P. has the same/similar lock-work). In short, I have come to the conclusion that the hype connected to the lock-work, that it is some how superior to a comparable S&W, is just that...hype.

Therefore, having satisfied my curiosity, I wish to sell the gun, but because of my add-ons, changes, etc., I have no idea what I should ask for it.

When I bought it, it had the "pencil" barrel as pictured. However, I discovered that there was a bulge in the barrel, so I ordered a more modern (no pencil barrels were available) Police Positive Special barrel from Numrich and had it re-barreled.

Its condition was not all that good, finish wise. Much of the blue is gone from the action. The original grips were worn fairly smooth on the right-side, indicating that it may have been in police service. However, the action was so stiff, that I doubt if it had been shot very much. Nevertheless, with the new barrel, it shoots point of aim at 15 yards with 148 grain wadcutters over 2.7 of Bullseye. I have added Asian grips and will include the originals, and an extra hand, and mainspring with the gun.

Also included, is a full-flap, Black basket-stamped holster. It is a holster that I have made with the intention of using it to protect the gun when sitting in my chair in the woods, menacing wild-life. Therefore, instead of a belt-loop, I put a very stiff spring clip on it so I could attach it to my belt, or as it is my custom when sitting, to the front bib of my coveralls.

I realize that I have lost my butt and will never get out of it what I have already put into it, but would like some idea of what I should ask for it as a shooter.

What it looks like now:

I would say it's value is not over worth more than $275. Thats because it is not an original colt any more and it has no collector value. It's only a shooter, so just go ahead and shoot it and try to wear it out. That would be a good way to finalize your comparison of the colt hype compared to other recovers.

I have no interest in doing that...I am old, in poor health and want to sell this gun so my wife does not have to, before I die.

Maybe I should have asked: "What would you pay for this gun (with a new barrel, holster, and grips), as a shooter?

As said it has no collector value now, although at present a Police positive has to be in really good shape to have much collector value.

I agree with $300 at the high end. Who knows on gunbroker though.

If you just want it gone so your wife doesn't have to deal with it I don't see why you would put a reserve. Reserves turn off a good number of bidders, myself included. I only reserve things I like but am not shooting much. Things I just want to get rid of get posted without a reserve.

As a "shooter" --- to train new shooters, grandkids, etc....its worth $ 200 in my view.

Like others said, its no longer a collectable..
