What should I add to my collection next?

I have a P&R 5" nickel S&W Model 27 and my first love, an unfired, NIB Colt Python (1980 model I believe). What am I missing? I've thought seriously about a Diamondback, a Trooper, a Model 57 or 29, as well as a 686 because they seem to be what many rely on, and I like the way they feel. I thought I wanted a model 19 or 66 but they just don't fit me, so I gave up on the K's for now. This next handgun will not be a safe queen like the Python but will be used for range, HD, maybe carry etc. It should also be American Made, and .38 cal or larger. Price isn't a real consideration since I'm going to sell/trade my Colt Commander to get my next handgun but it will be my last one for some time, so I want it to stick. I love revolvers but might replace the commander with a really good auto .45 so I'm looking for input on both. Thanks

Kimber is making some great .45 autos - be sure to check them out if you are serious about a .45. I have a Kimber Gold Match II and I love it - super reliable and accurate. I also have a Python circa 1978 that I shoot. :) That and the Kimber are my two favorites.

I'll start by recommending what I just bought a couple weeks ago: the new 50th Anniversary Ruger Blackhawk. The return of the Flattop in .357 Magnum. What a nice gun to hold and to shoot. A heck of a lot of gun for around $450. Only available this year. I've already put a couple hundred rounds through mine.

A S&W 686 but not the "normal model." Try to dig up one of the "Stocking Dealer" models with a 5" barrel and half lug instead of a full lug. Very, very nice gun. Its only "bad point" is the damn lock but what are you going to do? (Put it under the grips S&W!!)

An older S&W stainless or blue N frame in four inch. I'm thinking especially of the older style M657. I don't care for the current long barrel, full lug thing. Old 657's are in demand though so be prepared to buy quick if you see one! Or one of the semi-rare 629's in the P&R version would be great. I've wanted one of those for years.

A S&W M610 or 625 with moonclips would be fun too!

Locks be damned, I have a 686 4" which is a blast to shoot, and will be getting another in a 2" frame. Great gun, don't miss the chance to own at least one. :)

Between the Hartford constrictor and the 27 you have the mid bores well covered. How about a Smith wheelie in the larger calibers? (21, 24, 624, 25, 625, 57, 657, 58)? Since hunting is not among the uses you mentioned, maybe pick something in 45 ACP or 45 LC (25 or 625).

Oh man... you don't know what sweet is until you own a pre-lock 586 with 4" barrel.... not too big, not too small, not too heavy, not too light... I've got a LOT of Smiths, and must say this model is my top choice for general purpose... blued steel is not the most forgiving finish for those who are "hard" on their guns, but is drop dead seductive! If you beat your gun's finish up, then go for the 686, which is a more forgiving finish, but much less seductive. If you know how to take care of a fine blued gun, this is a total sweet spot.

Versatile caliber, accurate, reliable as the sun, rugged, durable, and luxuriously comfortable to shoot, even with full house .357 magnum loads. About as fine as a revolver has a right to be. Best choice? The 586 no dash models as shown in the first four pics above. The dash-5 is great too, but the early versions just have those nice extras: nicer action, no MIM parts, nicer polish/bluing, square butt. Mmmmmmmmmmm good!

I've got three of them so far and still looking for more. Crazy? I guess, but loving every minute of it. These are not easy to find, so when you do find one you should sit up, take notice, and ACT!
