I need recomendations on where is the best place to purchase a decent hunting scope for my Ruger M77 30/06 rifle. I only use it for hunting deer and hogs so want a low power vari. like 3x-9x or so maybe 2x-7x. Also what is the best I can do for 200 or less?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Best in that price range would be either a Bushnell 3200 2-6 which will set you back about $250 or a Leupold VXI 2-7 which will set you back about $180. A VXII goes for closer to $300.

Vortex Viper 2-7x32 on sale for $169.95. These scopes are really amazing for the money. They are every bit as clear as Bushnell, Leupold or Nikon, but for less money and they have a lifetime warranty as well.

3200 Elite

How about this one? Its on sale this week.

I see a bunch of scopes that to me look like the same scope, 3x9x40 with different price tags even when all are Elite 3200. How are you to tell what the small differences are? I do not need a top line scope to hunt with but I detest buying a piece of junk as well. Sorry for being such a Noob.

That's a good price. The reason there are so many similar 3200s is that they offer a variety of reticles, objective sizes, and turret options. The one you linked to would be a good hunting scope. Nothing wrong with being a noob. :)

Thanks

Thanks guys I think I will order the bushnell I linked to.
I have to admit that the viper looked good, but being older I was afraid to go smaller than a 40mm for more light. (I think thats correct).

There isn't always a correlation between the diameter of the optics and the light transmission. Some brands/models of 40mm will be brighter than another brand/model of 50mm. In addition, you also have to factor in the magnification. Generally, the greater the magnification the larger diameter you will need to get the same light transmission. That is why you can get by with a 2-6x32 when a 3-9 power scope would be a 40mm or a good 6-18 power would need a 50mm bell.

Just like everything else in the world, there are tradeoffs. The more magnification you have, the bigger the scope, the more weight you are carrying, the less the field of view, etc. My needs (hunting in FL with typical ranges less than 200 yds) is significantly different from the needs of a hunter in Wyoming (serious yardages in open territory). Figure out what your actual needs are and then limit your search to only those scopes which will meet those needs.
