What would you all recommend. I'm leaning toward a fixed power in the 2.5 to 4X range. Am I shortchanging myself on this. Should I go with more power of is 4X enough for the practical range of this cartridge.
BTW, the rifle is a CZ550 Magnum.

Leupold

If your going to have a nice Rifle with the Power the 416 has why don't you look at the luepold 1.5-6x scopes, good short range and you still have the option of 6x for the longer shots.

The .416 should be good out to 300yds so why short change yourself with a low power fixed Scope.

I can recommend the 2.5x Leupold from direct personal experience. About five inches of eye relief and the ability to shoot with both eyes open. If you are bound for Africa pack a spare scope mounted in the rings and zeroed, it will save you a lot of time if your primary scope goes Tango Uniform. Rob

Thanks guys, I think I'll probably go with the 2.5 fixed power, for two reasons, I kind of prefer fixed, and cost, the 1.5-6 is $750. and the 2.5 is around $200. for Leupolds.
Maybe or maybe not, but fixed powers are probably more durable, and on that caliber, that's a consideration.

RobCom,
good suggestion on carrying a second pre-mounted scope.
I live in and work in the middle east (am American), so a trip to Africa is definitely an option. Hope to do big bear with this rig too.

I would probably pick a 1.5-5x or 1-4x for a 416...as to price how many boxes of shells, in 416 Rigby, will it take to equal price of a scope :D

If you like fixed power I would say a 2.5 or so makes more sense for a 416 than a 4x. If you were talking a deer/elk rifle though then I would say go with 4X for fixed.

For many years Fixed 4x were used on 270's & 30-06's.

I own a custom built mauser chambered in 416 rigby and have gone thru 3 scopes with this rifle, two years ago I hit on the perfect scope for the bad boy. My friends laughed thier asses off when I first put it on but after two years and 200 rounds later they are not laughing now! The scopes I tried were a bsa , a leupold, and a burris. This rifle blew the crosshairs off after 25 to 30 rounds, all three were replaced by the manufacturers so I lost no cash. The scope that rides on top of the rifle now is a ........Simmons 3x9X40 AIR RIFLE scope and I don't think I'll have to replace it for a long time!!!!
