I plan on getting a marlim 336 and want to know what would be a good compact low range varible" like in the 1 to 5 range? that is good for low light shooting? thanks. sj

SFAIK, few--if any--of the low-powered variables have a 40mm objective lens. Most of them have an objective lens which fits into the scope tube. I guess they'd run about 24mm? Something like that.

I've always had good luck with a K4-type critter. I'm also very pleased with my Leupold Vari-X II, 2X7; it works well at night on coyotes with just a flashlight.

Browse some of the scopemakers' websites; I could be wrong about the lenses...

Hey, thanx, Kernel.

Now look for an ad in Shotgun News, with the scope at around 40% off...Or etailers like Midway, I guess.

Art, just make sure you get the Japanese Trophy, it'll say so on the tube. Some of the Trophy line is made in Korea (I know the 3-9x and the 1.75-4x are) and is of far less quality. -- Kernel

Out to 150 yards......

Williams foolproof peep sights are seriously high quality, very repeatable adjustments, and totally acceptable for good hits on game or man at that distance.

More durable than scopes, cheaper than scopes...just a thought..

Simmons has a 1.5x6X Whitetail Expedtion for $159.99. I just bought two to put on my, and my wife's Ruger Internationals. They look like real good scopes for the money.
Burris has a 1.5 (ot 1.75, I forget which and I'm too lazy to look.) that's a good scope, but a lot more money.
Frankly, and this is just my opinion, a good brand name 2,2.5, or 3X scope is more than sufficient for a 30-30. A lot cheaper too.

Where and What are you hunting?

I have a M94 Winchester 32 spl. carbine open sights and my fathers M64 32 spl rifle with a B&L 4x32 side mount. (Hey, don't yell at me - he had it drilled and mounted when his eyes started to go. Rifle was his christmas gift from my mother first year they were married.) Anyway now it's mine now and I LOVE it!!! Shoots groups that I like at 75 yds.

Here in Western PA most whitetails are actually taken under 50 yards believe it or not!!!! Statics show that more deer have been taken by the venerable 3030 ( ala 35 Rem and 32spl) than all other cartridges combined.

3030 and 32 spl seem to 'plow through brush' where my Rem 700 BDL 30.06 seems to take off into the heavens or unknown.

I digress!!! Sorry!!!

Under 75yds or so why do you need a scope?? Light enhancement only? or unless your eyes are getting like mine!!!- stick w/ a 4x40+ in whatever fits your budget and when mounted gives you the proper relief. Mounts have a lot to do with this!!!!

sjones, I have a Marlin 336, I had a Bushnell 4X32 on it for a bit, it was great for the distances you are asking. A fixed 6X would be the cat's a$$, but a good 4X will do fine.

If you want a variable, I think Leupold still reigns supreme. Their Vari-X 2's are pretty reasonable. But the 3's are better still.

With a fast handling rifle like that, it would be a shame to burden it with too much glass. I would use the Leupold 2.5x "scout" scope. For inside of one hundred yards an Aimpoint or good aperture sights.

Too much magnification is more of a handicap than too little. The primary advantage of a scope is that you only have one visual plane to focus on.

I have Leo's but you might try...

A Bausch & Lomb. I got a 1.5 x 6 for my Whelen. Side by side it seems very comparable to the Leo for less money. I have 2 B&L's and three Leo's.

I'd really consider getting the Butler Creek black flip caps for hunting. Protects the lenses and keeps rain and dust off. Have them on every one of my scopes. Make sure they fit real tight (don't go by the chart in the store).

As to power, my uncle used to take all kinds of game out West with a fixed 4x. I think for normal hunting more people get too much power rather than too little.

Another good scope nobody mentioned yet is the Weaver V3. It is a 1-3 power, and has excellent optics IMHO. 3x should be plenty of magnification for 150yds. I just mounted one on a .358 Win. BLR, which is about a 250yd. cartridge, and I don't feel handicapped by the 3x power.

I would also agree with the gent who suggested taking a look at the Williams peep sight. Lighter, less complicated, and doesn't change the handling of a light weight carbine.

The Weaver V3 is a quality, very lightweight scope. I put one on my Rem 700 titanium in 7mm08. It's strictly a walking-hunting gun for me; comes in total at 6-1/4 pounds.

Anyway, I've had no trouble holding inside 1-1/2" at 100 yards with it.

My Marlin 30-30 has a Tasco 3-9X40, has been there for 10 years, never failed me. Its always bothered me to put a scope on a weapon that cost more than the weapon, don't know why............it just does.
