What rifle looks like this?

I was playing one of my favorite video games earlier and a major feature is modern guns in a post-apocalyptic setting, often in a humorous way. I came across this one earlier and couldn't fight off the idea that it would be a really cool project to work on. No practical purpose whatsoever over than to have fun building and creating the only firing replica that I'm aware of.

The gun is chambered in .223 in the game and that seems like a good starting point, although .22 or .17 wouldn't be a bad choice other than sacrificing accuracy to the source media.

I've heard it suggested that the Mossberg MVP would be a good choice, but that's a little expensive for something like that. True replication isn't too paramount: A removable magazine would be nice, ability to add a scope and black thumbhole stock is paramount. I'll either leave the suppressor off or try to find a mock one. Any scope will do also.

This is not a request I'm taking too seriously, but if I find a good "donor" rifle at a good price to work from, this might find its way to my bench.

Are we talking bolt or semi?

CZ have some very cool, heavy barreled bolt guns in .223 and .22LR, such as the 527 varmint and 452 Match. Both take mags.

The later has a thumb hole for sure and stocks can be bought for the former.

The heavy barrel gives a lot of meat to thread for a suppressor.

Either way, I like these kinds of projects, so good luck and keep us posted.

I googled that gun, and I think it looks a lot like the Savage MARK II BTVS. It is a .22, not. 5.56, so the magazine is smaller. Also the contour of the thumbhole stock is different, but in reality, you will not find a stock like the ratslayer. It is combination of thumbhole and tactical that would not work in practice. The thumbhole is in a spot you would simply not put your thumb.

Anyway, there may be other guns to look at, but the ratslayer reciever looks more like a .22 than any centfire reciever I can think of.

The closest thing you'll find, visually and somewhat functionally, will be the Savage Model 25.

But, you'll still have to track down or make a stock with that impossibly-located "thumbhole", and I know of no one making magazines that will hold more than 4 rounds.

Functionally, the Mossberg MVP is probably the closest, but the receiver is all wrong.

If the RatSlayer wasn't modeled on the Savage 25, it was probably modeled on the generic form of 'budget' rimfire bolt guns (Marlin 700/800/900 series, Savage Mk II, etc) and just had a .223-sized magazine slapped on the model.

Hummmm, ratslayer you say?

Looks like a MVP-Flex to me but with a different butt stock. (they do have a thumbhole stock, but I have yet to see one for sale)

Yes the barrel is threaded and ready for a can if you want one.

You want something a little more closer to the game throw on a night vision scope for $319, from Optics Planet.

I'm more concerned about the spirit of the recreation than exact dimensions. The thumbhole contour doesn't have to be the same. The scope and magazine don't have to be the same. I want it to be instantly recognizable, not a scale model or perfect replica. I don't have much use for a Night Vision scope either.

It dawned on me... I'm not willing to spend $500 on a new rifle for this. If I'm going to spend $500 on a rifle, I'll spend it on one that has a practical purpose like hunting or bench rest shooting. But I do already have most of what I need.

I think with a black thumbhole stock painted that way, a 10 round magazine, and a mock suppressor (I'm neither old enough to buy a suppressor nor willing to) I could have a pretty cool likeness for a lot less money. It's already got the major features: Iron sights, bent bolt handle, magazine that extends well below the stock.

If I were going to spend $500 on a gun to recreate one from the game, it would be this one http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb...mages/7/72/A_Light_Shining_in_Darkness_02.png

Might be another, more distant project of mine. But that's for another thread.

For now, anyone know where to get a relatively inexpensive thumbhole stock for a CZ? Preferably synthetic?

This one complete is less than $500 or even less than $300, it is a semi-auto not a bolt, but it does shoot rats.

Go look for an old used, cheap Marlin or Mossberg .22 bolt gun. Drill a hole in the stock where you want it (the one in the game gun is not in a place practical for use), so it looks the same. Thread the barrel and screw on a fake can, top with what ever scope looks right to you, and there you are.

Possibly under $200, if you can get the rifle cheap.

44, that sounds like a great way to practice some actual gunsmithing skills on top of it all instead of just saying "eh, I saw it on a video game and it looked cool"
Could also use it for some trigger, bolt, and bedding work experience.

Do you know of any of those cheap used models that does have the extended magazine or maybe can easily be modified to take one?

Sorry Dakota, I don't know of any. The guns I'm thinking of were bargain guns back in the 70s, and while they had mags (5rnds, usual), extended mags and things like that weren't ever much.

Lots of those old .22 bolt guns had mags that got lost. And the guns can often be found cheap, because there is no mag.

Finding, and fitting an extended mag to one of those guns would be another test of your gunsmithing skills. :D
